Anesthesia Intern

Under the supervision of and direction of an anesthesia provider, the incumbent participates in the implementation and assurance of high-quality patient care, evaluation and documentation preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively. The intern will assist the CRNA or Anesthesiologist with pre- /post-operative assessments. Accurately monitor patients and perform Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), ventilation or life support measures during emergencies needed. The incumbent will ensure operation and monitoring of equipment.

Assure that adequate supplies are available for perioperative cases. The intern will assist the anesthesia provider with preparation of blocks, point of care laboratory testing, provide Nursing care for recovery and transport as needed. Participate in other departmental/professional duties as requested by anesthesia leadership including educational and experiential opportunities toward becoming a licensed CRNA.

(50%) Under continuous supervision by a licensed CRNA, participate in the plan of care during procedures while keeping patient safety a priority. Under continuous supervision of the licensed CRNA, assist with post-anesthesia care and evaluation. Assist operating room RN staff within the scope of practice of a licensed RN as requested. Provides assistance in performing physiologic monitoring. (30%) Assemble equipment and supplies for procedures.

Monitor the sterile field. (20%) Participate in staff development by attending in-services, educational meetings, staff meetings, and other meetings/seminars as requested by anesthesia leadership.

Certifications and Licensures

Credential: ACLS:
Advanced Cardiac Life Support

Equivalent Experience: Within 1 month of hire or transfer into position.

Credential: BLS:
Basic Life Support

Equivalent Experience: Within 1 month of hire or transfer into position.

Credential: RN:
Registered Nurse

Required Education

Education: BACH

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND

SKILLS:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing and currently enrolled with a minimum period of 6 months in an accredited CRNA program. Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner. One year of critical care nursing experience either in the intensive care unit (ICU) or emergency department required.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as trauma, grief and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position. Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing are necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis. Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
