Position Summary

Waverly-Shell Rock High School is seeking a Health and Physical Education teacher who is passionate about working with high school students and committed to building strong relationships, high expectations, and a positive school culture. This position will primarily teach Health courses, with additional responsibilities in Strength and Physical Education, supporting students as they develop lifelong wellness habits, physical literacy, and personal responsibility.

This role is well-suited for an educator who values Health and Physical Education as essential to student success and well‑being and who brings energy, consistency, and care to their work. Under the supervision of the Principal, the teacher will help students build an understanding of physical, mental, and emotional health while fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver high‑quality instruction in Health and Physical Education aligned with district goals
  • Teach topics related to health, nutrition, anatomy, physiology, hygiene, exercise, and overall wellness
  • Emphasize safety, personal responsibility, and lifelong fitness
  • Assess student learning and adjust instruction to meet individual needs, including students with special needs
  • Maintain accurate records for grading, attendance, and reporting
  • Establish and maintain classroom expectations that support a respectful and productive learning environment
  • Communicate regularly with students and families and encourage family involvement
  • Collaborate with colleagues within the Health and Physical Education department and across the school
  • Participate in staff meetings, committees, and professional learning opportunities
  • Select, manage, and maintain instructional materials and equipment
  • Complete other duties as assigned by school or district administration

Qualifications
  • Valid Iowa teaching license with Health and Physical Education endorsements
  • Strong knowledge of health education, physical education, and strength training principles
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with others
  • Comfort using instructional technology and student data to support learning
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior secondary teaching experience
Education and Certification
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Iowa certification in Physical Education preferred
Work Environment

This position is based in a school setting and involves typical classroom, gym, and office environments. Travel to district buildings and professional meetings may be required.
