Principal
Job GoalThe Attendance & Student Engagement Coordinator is a teacher leader responsible for improving student attendance, reducing chronic absenteeism, and supporting school-wide systems aligned to state guidance. This individual will lead efforts to identify at-risk students, implement intervention strategies, and build a culture that prioritizes and monitors attendance daily. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year (approximately 18 days), regardless of the reason, and has a direct impact on student achievement and graduation outcomes.
This role is critical in addressing that need at the school level.
- Data Monitoring & Accountability
- Track daily attendance data and identify students at risk of chronic absenteeism
- Maintain and monitor a "watch list" of students approaching the 10% threshold
- Analyze trends by grade level, subgroup, and time of year
- Provide regular attendance reports to the administration and leadership teams
- Intervention & Support Systems
- Develop and implement tiered attendance interventions (Tier 1, 2, and
3) - Coordinate attendance improvement plans for chronically absent students
- Work with counselors, administrators, and teachers to address root causes
- Monitor the effectiveness of interventions and adjust as needed
- Student & Family Engagement
- Communicate with families regarding attendance concerns and expectations
- Coordinate parent meetings, attendance contracts, and support plans
- Build positive relationships with students to improve engagement and accountability
- Staff Collaboration & Leadership
- Serve as the point person for attendance initiatives across the school
- Provide teachers with strategies to improve classroom engagement and attendance
- Support grade-level teams with attendance data and action steps
- Lead or support attendance-focused PLC discussions
- School Culture & Awareness
- Promote the importance of attendance through school-wide messaging
- Recognize and celebrate improved or strong attendance
- Help build systems that make students feel connected and accountable
- Compliance & Alignment
- Ensure school practices align with state and district attendance policies
- Collaborate with the Office of Compulsory School Attendance when needed
- Maintain accurate documentation for attendance interventions and communication.
