Job Description

Exempt Status: Non-Exempt

No. of Days: According to district approved calendar

Department: Assigned Campus, Special Services

Reports To: Principal, Supervising Teacher, Special Services Supervisor

Supervises: None

Education
  • High School Diploma or GED and/or 30 semester hours of an accredited college or university
  • Educational Aide Certificate from state of Texas
Experience
  • Some experience working with special education children preferred
Position Function / Purpose

Provides instructional assistance to students under the supervision of a certified teacher; assists in preparing, conducting, and managing classroom activities. Provides support facilitation in the general education classroom to support IEP implementation.

Essential Functions
  • Follow the directions of the supervisor
  • Preparing materials and displays as directed;
    Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays
  • Demonstrate acceptable written and verbal skills
  • Work in a cooperative manner with both teacher and students
  • Assisting the teacher in maintaining student discipline
  • Assisting the teacher in assuming responsibility for the care and safety of students
  • Assisting the teacher in assuming responsibility for the care of equipment and teaching materials
  • Work with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional exercises assigned by teacher
  • Inform the teacher of any special needs or problems of individual students
  • Changing diapers for students
  • Toileting students
  • Feeding or assisting with feeding students
  • Assisting with lifting students
  • Assisting students with other self‑help skills
  • Blending foods
  • Cooking foods
  • Assisting with loading and unloading students
  • All other duties as assigned by the supervisor
  • A teacher assistant in special education is subject to reassignment during the year because of student population shifts; therefore, these may be additional responsibilities.
  • Qualification Requirements
  • Possess, or be willing to apply for, a TEA Educational Aide Certificate (personal expense)
  • Educational Aide certificate as established by the State Board for Educator Certification. The applicant for the educational aide certificate shall hold a high school diploma or equivalent, or higher; have satisfied one of the following requirements:
    • Has three creditable years of experience related to education as an aide I or II
    • Has completed 30 semester credit hours of college credit with emphasis on child growth and development or related areas
    • Has experience working with students and parents as approved by the superintendent
  • Special Knowledge / Skills
    • Good people skills
    • Ability to work well with children and all students

    Physical Demands

    Regularly required to sit, stand, move throughout the room, communicate verbally and electronically, use hands to handle objects, reach with hands and arms, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, and climb or balance. Regularly required to lift or exert force up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Regular attendance required.
