Job Description

Position: Teacher Assistant, Autism Class

Exempt Status: Non‑Exempt

Number of Days: According to district approved calendar

Department: Teaching and Learning

Reports To: Principal, Supervising Teacher, Special Services Supervisor

Supervises: None

Responsibilities
  • Help maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment.
  • Assist the teacher with preparing instructional materials and classroom organization.
  • Assist the teacher as needed with delivering lesson plans, encouraging student participation, and helping students navigate the school building.
  • Assist the teacher in keeping administrative records and preparing required reports.
  • Establish a positive rapport with students, parents, and school personnel.
  • Assist students with physical and personal care needs including feeding, bathroom needs, personal hygiene, cafeteria, bus and playground monitoring.
  • Implement positive behavior supports and interventions with students and assist teachers with crisis intervention as needed.
  • Assist in managing behaviors of students per individual student plans.
  • Attend appropriate and required staff development to enhance instruction and support roles.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • All other duties as assigned by the supervisor/teacher.
  • Qualifications

    Minimum Education/Credential:

    • High school diploma or GED and/or 30 semester hours of an accredited college or university.
    • Educational Aide Certificate from the state of Texas.

    Experience:

    • Some experience working with special education children.

    Special Knowledge/

    Skills:

  • Ability to attend staff development trainings as required by the district.
  • Good people skills.
  • Ability to work well with all students.
  • Effective communication and organization skills.
  • Physical Demands
  • Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling.
  • Heavy lifting (45 lbs or over).
  • Pushing/pulling.
  • Lifting and transferring students to and from wheelchairs and assisting with positioning students’ physical limitations.
  • Walking.
  • Regular attendance required.
  • Equipment Used
    • Copier
    • Audio‑visual equipment
    • Laminator
    • Computer
    • Wheelchairs, lifts, crutches, blender, stove, and medical equipment in some cases.
    Work Environment
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Implement CPI holds/restraints as needed.
  • Use of general office equipment.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Work indoors and outdoors.
