Job Description

POSITION: Teacher Aide, Library Assistant

EXEMPT STATUS: Non-Exempt

NUMBER OF DAYS: According to district calendar

DEPARTMENT: Teaching and Learning

REPORTS TO: Principal and Teacher / Librarian Assigned

SUPERVISES: None

Required

Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED and/or 30 semester hours of an accredited college or university
  • Educational Aide Certificate from state
  • Some experience working with children
Position Function / Purpose

Assist the librarian and assist the teacher in the preparation and management of activities and administrative requirements.

Essential Functions
  • Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.
  • Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
  • Work with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.
  • Assist with the administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
  • Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students.
  • Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom and library.
  • Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Assist the teacher and librarian in keeping administrative records and preparing required reports.
  • Participate in in-service training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as needed.
  • All other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Processing books and instructional media.
  • Inventory classroom needs on a regular basis.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Other duties as assigned by cluster librarian and or building principals.
  • Qualification Requirements
    • Possess, or be willing to apply for, a TEA Educational Aide Certificate (personal expense).
    • Educational Aide certificate as established by the State Board for Educator Certification. The applicant for the educational aide certificate shall:
  • Hold a high school diploma, the equivalent of a high school diploma, or higher;
  • Have satisfied one of the following requirements:
  • a. Three creditable years of experience, as defined in Chapter 153, Subchapter CC, of this title (relating to Commissioner's Rules on Creditable Years of Service), as either an educational aide I or II; or
  • b. Completed 30 semester credit hours of college credit with some emphasis on child growth and development or related subject areas.
  • Ability to work well with children.
  • Knowledge of general office equipment.
  • Physical Demands

    Standing (at least 30 minutes per period); stooping; bending; light to moderate lifting 15–44 lbs.; moderate to heavy carrying; ability to see and monitor students' activity; regular attendance required.
