POSITION: Teacher Assistant, Autism Class
EXEMPT STATUS: Non-Exempt
NUMBER OF DAYS: According to district approved calendar
DEPARTMENT:
Teaching and Learning
REPORTS TO: Principal, Supervising Teacher, Special Services Supervisor
SUPERVISES: None
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or GED and/or 30 semester hours of an accredited college or university
- Educational Aide Certificate from state of Texas
- Some experience working with special education children
Assist special education teacher provide for physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in special education and general education settings
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Help to maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment
2. Assist the teacher with preparing instructional materials and classroom organization
3. Assist the teacher as needed with delivering lesson plans, encouraging student participation, and helping students navigate the school building
4. Assist teacher in keeping administrative records and prepare required reports
5. Establish a positive rapport with students, parents and school personnel
6. Assist students with physical and personal care needs including feeding, bathroom needs, personal hygiene,
cafeteria, bus and playground monitoring
7. Implement positive behavior supports and interventions with students and assist teachers with crisis
intervention as needed
8. Assist in managing behaviors of students per individual student plans
9. Attend appropriate and required staff development to enhance instruction and support roles
10. Maintain confidentiality
11. All other duties as assigned by the supervisor/teacher
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Certification/Education:
1. Possess, or be willing to apply for, a TEA Educational Aide Certificate (personal expense)
2. Educational Aide certificate as established by the State Board for Educator Certification. The applicant for the educational aide certificate shall
1. hold a high school diploma, the equivalent of a high school diploma, or higher;
2. have satisfied one of the following requirements:
a. has three creditable years of experience, as defined in Chapter 153, Subchapter CC, of this title (relating to Commissioner's Rules on Creditable Years of Service), as either an educational aide I or II;
b. has completed 30 semester credit hours of college credit with some emphasis on child growth and development or related subject areas;
3. and have experience working with students and parents as approved by the employing superintendent.
Special Knowledge/ Skills:
3. The ability to attend staff development trainings as required by the district

5. Ability to work well with all students
6. Effective communication and organization skills
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
1. Frequent Standing/stooping/bending/kneeling
2. Heavy lifting (45 lbs. or over)
3. Pushing/Pulling
4. Lifting and transferring students to and from wheelchairs and assisting with positioning student's physical limitations
5. Walking
6. Regular attendance required.

1. Copier
2. Audio visual equipment
3. Laminator
4. Typewriter/Computer
In some cases: wheel chairs, lifts, crutches, blender, stove and medical equipment
