Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the teacher will develop students' knowledge and understanding of world cultures and cultural evolution; develop research skills in social orders; and foster appreciation of world cultures, languages, racial, ethnic, and religious groups, and political systems.
Essential Functions- Develop and administer Social Studies curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, translating them into learning experiences with unit organization around historical problems, challenging students, and maximizing instructional time.
- Teach knowledge of social studies, incorporating history, geography, economics, political science, systems of government, education, responsible citizenship, and humanities.
- Develop students' understanding of various racial, ethnic, religious and political groups and mores, socio-economic status, and the influence of various factors on human rights and freedom.
- Foster an understanding of the continuity and patterns of human behavior through the ages, and an awareness of the complexity and interrelationship of local, state, national and world problems and approaches to their solutions.
- Demonstrate how the past provides a comparative basis to evaluate current issues and predict courses of action for the future, with continuous reference to contemporary matters of importance.
- Develop students' research, interpersonal, and critical judgment skills through a variety of reading, writing, group discussion and presentation assignments to stimulate self-reliance in problem-solving and drawing conclusions.
- Promote critical analysis of the media effect on information flow and public discourse, encouraging students to seek and compare alternative sources concerning key world issues.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, modifying instructional methods to fit individual needs, including students with special needs; conduct individual and small group instruction as needed.
- Continuously acquire professional knowledge by attending seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or conducting research.
- Organize and maintain a system for accurate record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievements, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensure student conduct conforms to school standards and district policies, establishing and maintaining behavior standards for a functional learning atmosphere.
- Coordinate with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
- Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids, and supplies; maintain inventory records.
Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
Equipment- Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
- Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, and differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
- Knowledge of world history in various subtopics, including history, geography, sociology, economics, political science, systems of government, education, responsible citizenship, anthropology, and humanities.
- Knowledge of humanity's major problems and past approaches to solutions.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and action plan formulation.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation for professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Work in standard office and school building environments.
- NJ State Certification as a Social Studies Teacher
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
- Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
