Education
  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Certification/Licensure:
    Valid classroom teacher certificate and Valid Special Education teaching certification
  • T‑TESS or ILD certified preferred (or eligible to attend certification training)
  • Bilingual certificate or ESL endorsement preferred

Minimum of three years successful special education teaching experience

Position Function/Purpose

To provide leadership to the Special Education program in support of the instructional program.

Essential Functions
  • Lead in setting instructional goals__those broad statements which define the expectation of student achievement in the department.
  • Work with the MISD Special Education Director in developing and refining instructional goals for the subject areas.
  • Support the use of the PLC model in the collaboration and planning, writing, and implementation of IEP goals for special education teachers.
  • Function in the classroom as a resource person who models exemplary instruction and classroom management.
  • Model innovative materials and services, and pilot programs needed to meet instructional goals.
  • Serve as a resource person to provide instructional assistance and materials to teachers.
  • Report periodically through the Special Education Director to the Division of Instruction Services on the achievement of program instruction goals and initiate program adjustments as needed.
  • Prepare teachers for proper administration of student assessment instruments.
  • Confer with both teachers and administrators regarding the analysis of test data and plans with them any needed alterations in the instructional program or practices.
Supervisory Leadership Duties
  • Supervise the instructional program and the performance of teachers in the department and accept specific supervisory duties as delegated by the Director.
  • Utilize classroom visits for effective supervision of the department.
  • In formal clinical supervision, set up a schedule for regular classroom visits and notify teachers in writing of these visits.
  • Visit the classroom of each teacher in the department at least once each year.
  • Confer at regular intervals with the Special Education Director regarding observations.
  • Schedule meetings which have as their primary purpose instructional improvement and/or program development.
  • Aid in the preparation of professional development activities on both the campus and school district levels.
Leadership Duties
  • Provide leadership in the selection of instructional materials.
Administrative Leadership Duties
  • Ensure the implementation of administrative regulations within the department.
  • Give necessary assistance to substitute teachers serving the department.
  • Participate in the selection and assignment of personnel as requested by the Special Education Director.
Team Leadership Duties
  • Integrate the work of the Special Education Department into the total instructional program of the school through consultation with the principal and other special education support personnel.
  • Participate and serve on special committees at the campus and district levels.
  • Confer with the Director regarding any needed changes for upgrading the classroom practices of the department in compliance with district policy.
  • Work cooperatively with the total school staff in order to facilitate instructional programs.
  • Work closely with teachers, principals, assistant principals, and counselors on matters of student discipline.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel.
