Job Description

Position: Special Education Teacher, Resource/Inclusion (Exempt)

Department: Special Services

Reports To: Principal, Special Services Supervisor

Supervises: As assigned

Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university; valid teaching certificate for subject/grade level assigned;
Special Education certified; eligible for Probationary Certificate through TEA approved program.

Experience: Student teaching or approved internship or Alternative Teacher Certification Program training.

Purpose: Provide students with learning activities and experiences to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth and enable them to function successfully in society.

Essential Functions
  • Participate regularly in ARD Committee meetings.
  • Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop IEPs through the ARD process for each assigned student.
  • Develop and implement curriculum plans for the assigned program, providing written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepare lessons reflecting accommodations for individual student differences.
  • Present subject matter according to Texas Education Agency guidelines, board policies, and regulations.
  • Use a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with student needs.
  • Cooperate with staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives, and methods per district requirements.
  • Plan and supervise assignments for teacher assistants/volunteers.
  • Integrate technology into teaching and learning.
  • Assist in selecting books, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instruction to provide differentiated learning.
  • Apply student-centered discipline techniques and effective classroom management strategies.
  • Help students analyze and improve study habits.
  • Assess student achievements regularly and provide progress reports.
  • Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding as stated in IEPs.
  • Assume responsibilities for duties and extracurricular activities as assigned.
  • Serve as a positive role model supporting the district mission.
  • Create a conducive learning environment appropriate for student maturity and interests.
  • Maintain classroom control and administer discipline per policies and IEPs.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students.
  • Assist in supervising students before, during, and after school as directed by the principal.
  • Promote a positive work environment and staff morale.
  • Participate with staff in building a common vision for school improvement.
  • Engage in planning to ensure attainment of the school's mission.
  • Assist in selecting/orienting new instructional staff.
  • Protect equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain open communication with students and parents.
  • Maintain professional relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Use clear communication skills when presenting information.
  • Participate in district professional development programs.
  • Show interest and initiative in professional improvement.
  • Observe professional and ethical standards per community norms and TEA code of ethics.
  • Stay informed and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations for teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file required reports and documents.
  • Attend faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
