Job DescriptionPOSITION: Teacher Assistant, Life Skills
EXEMPT STATUS: Non‑Exempt
NUMBER OF DAYS: According to district‑approved calendar
DEPARTMENT: Teaching and Learning
REPORTS TO: Principal, Supervising Teacher, Special Services Supervisor
SUPERVISES: None
Education- High School Diploma or GED and/or 30 semester hours of an accredited college or university
- Educational Aide Certificate from the state of Texas
- Some experience working with special education children
To assist the classroom teacher in the care and instruction of the students in the classroom.
Essential Functions- Follow the directions of the supervisor
- Prepare materials and displays as directed
- Demonstrate acceptable written and verbal communication skills
- Work in a cooperative manner with both teacher and students
- Assist the teacher in maintaining student discipline
- Assist the teacher in assuming responsibility for the care and safety of students
- Assist the teacher in assuming responsibility for the care of equipment and teaching materials
- Change diapers for students
- Assist with toileting students
- Assist with feeding or feed students
- Assist with lifting students
- Assist students with other self‑help skills
- Blend foods
- Cook foods
- Assist with loading and unloading students
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor
NOTE: A teacher assistant in special education may be reassigned during the year because of student population shifts.
Qualification Requirements- Possess, or be willing to apply for, a Texas Education Agency (TEA) Educational Aide Certificate (personal expense)
- Educational Aide certificate as established by the State Board for Educator Certification. The applicant shall
1. Hold a high school diploma, or equivalent, or higher;
2. Have satisfied one of the following requirements:
- Three creditable years of experience as an educational aide I or II;
- Completed 30 semester credit hours of college credit with emphasis on child growth and development or related subjects;
3. Have experience working with students and parents as approved by the employing superintendent.
