Position Overview

The Academic & Behavioral Intervention Specialist provides targeted instructional and behavioral support to special education students under the direction of certified Special Education Teachers and Student Support Services. Operating at a higher level than a traditional paraprofessional role, this non-certified, hourly position requires the analytical application of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), specialized academic instruction, data collection, and independent crisis de-escalation to foster student independence and growth.

  • Pay Scale: $31/hr mid-Tier Professional (Tiered above Instructional Aide / Paraprofessional)

    Building Principal
Key Responsibilities
  • Behavioral Support & Intervention:
    Implement targeted Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and positive behavior support strategies; utilize training in de-escalation techniques to handle behavioral crises safely and effectively.
  • Academic Instruction:
    Deliver small-group and one-on-one instructional interventions aligned with individualized education programs (IEPs), adapting materials developed by certified special education staff to meet students' unique learning needs.
  • Data Collection & Tracking:
    Continuously monitor and log student behavioral data and intervention outcomes; assist certified teachers in analyzing trends for progress reporting.
  • Collaborative Support:
    Partner with special education teachers and general education staff to ensure consistent implementation of accommodations across environments.
  • Student Independence:
    Guide and prompt students in self-regulation, organizational skills, and social-emotional growth, fading support systematically to promote autonomy.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    Bachelor's degree or experience with intense academic or behavioral interventions with students.
  • Experience:

    Minimum of 1-2 years working with individuals with diverse learning, developmental, or behavioral needs in an educational or therapeutic setting preferred.
  • Certifications:

    Crisis Intervention / De-escalation certification (e.g., CPI or Safety-Care) preferred or obtainable upon hire.
  • Strong knowledge of behavior modification strategies and child development
  • Ability to remain calm, patient, and objective during high-stress situations
  • Clear written and verbal communication for accurate data reporting and team collaboration
