Position:
Scholar Bowl Sponsor

Board approval is dependent upon evidence of full funding for the program.

Job Summary:

The Junior High Scholar Bowl Sponsor provides leadership, instruction, and supervision for students participating in academic competition. The coach organizes practices, teaches content knowledge and competition strategies, and ensures a safe, positive, and educationally enriching experience that promotes academic excellence and good sportsmanship.

Qualifications /

Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with junior high school students.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to student safety, equity, and positive youth development.
  • Ability to pass required background checks and meet district employment standards.

Reports to:

Activities/Athletics Director or Building Principal

Responsibilities
  • Program Planning & Instruction
  • Develop a season plan, practice schedule, and competition calendar aligned with the school calendar and activities director guidance.
  • Teach Scholar Bowl strategies (e.g., buzzer timing, teamwork, question analysis) and build students’ knowledge across core academic areas.
  • Prepare students for conference, invitational, and state-level competition as applicable.
  • Team Management & Supervision
  • Recruit, select, and maintain rosters in accordance with district, conference, and state association guidelines.
  • Supervise students at all practices, competitions, and team-related travel; ensure student safety and appropriate behavior.
  • Coordinate transportation, field trips, and chaperones per district policies.
  • Compliance & Communication
  • Know and follow all applicable rules (e.g., state activities association, conference, district policies).
  • Communicate regularly with students, parents/guardians, and administrators regarding expectations, schedules, results, and student progress.
  • Maintain accurate records (rosters, eligibility, attendance, finances, fundraising, awards).
  • Manage team communications (website/social media as approved, emails, newsletter).
  • Professionalism & Role Modeling
  • Model appropriate adult behavior, positivity, and respect for all participants, officials, and opponents.
  • Promote academic achievement, good citizenship, and school pride.
  • Attend required coaches’ meetings, preseason orientations, and postseason wrap-ups.
Time Commitment

Primarily after-school hours for practices and competitions; some evenings and weekends during tournament season.

Local and possibly regional travel for competitions.

Use of school facilities, technology, and district-approved communication tools.
