Job Description – Material/Process Inspector I or II (Midland Area)
TxDOT's Odessa District is looking for a Material/Process Inspector I or II, based in our Midland Area Office. We are seeking highly motivated individuals to perform advanced material tests in laboratories, plants, roadways and/or at points of supply. This position will report to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work performed under this position.

Salary Range- Material/Process Inspector I: B18 $ 45,976 – $71,055 / annually
- Material/Process Inspector II: B19 $ 48,244 – $76,028 / annually
- Minimum Salary: 45,521.00
- Maximum Salary: 76,028.00

- Perform material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply.
- Conduct nuclear density test on subgrade, base and asphaltic concrete pavement (Inspector I).
- Coordinate test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors, material producers and suppliers.
- Keep equipment mileage and service records and schedule equipment repairs.
- Maintain and calibrate equipment.
- Perform tests and inspection duties.
- Report test results to field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
- Secure, log in and prepare samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various stages of production for testing.
- Drive/travel to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs.
- Work full‑time at a geographically separated location.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Education: High School Graduate or equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience: For Inspector I – no experience required (full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent). For Inspector II – 1 year of laboratory work, material inspection or other engineer‑related work.

- Attention to detail and review information to identify errors.
- Perform calculations using algebra, trigonometry and geometry.
- Use computers, applicable programs, applications and systems.
- Exercise logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; make decisions that support business objectives and goals.
- Subject to atmospheric conditions – fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation.
- Exposure to oils and cutting fluids; wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, etc.).
- Work frequently in small/crawl spaces, manholes, narrow aisles.
- Frequent lifting up to 50 lbs; additional physical tasks as listed.
- Permitted to have a pre‑employment physical; must pass drug test. Safety impact position subject to random drug testing.
- Required to work outside 8 am–5 pm, weekends, holidays and inclement weather.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment and comply with all safety requirements.
