Material/Process Inspector I or II (Midland Area)

Position Information:
TxDOT’s Odessa District is hiring a Material/Process Inspector to work in the Midland Area Office. The successful candidate will perform advanced material tests in laboratories, plants, roadways, and points of supply under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer.

Salary Range

Material/Process Inspector I: B18 $ 45,976 – $71,055 per year
Material/Process Inspector II
: B19 $ 48,244 – $76,028 per year

Travel required:

10% of the time.

Job Responsibilities – Material/Process Inspector I
  • Conduct nuclear density test on subgrade, base, and asphaltic concrete pavement.
  • Coordinate test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors, material producers, and suppliers.
  • Maintain equipment mileage, service records, and schedule repairs.
  • Maintain and calibrate equipment.
  • Perform tests and inspection duties.
  • Report test results to field construction personnel and assist in determining causes for material problems.
  • Secure, log, and prepare samples of raw or manufactured materials at various production stages for testing.
  • Drive/travel to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses, and project sites to monitor program status.
  • Work full‑time at a geographically separated location.
  • Perform additional job responsibilities as assigned.
Job Responsibilities – Material/Process Inspector II
  • Handle material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors.
  • Prepare and maintain inspection or test reports and issue material reports.
  • Review plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements.
  • Maintain and calibrate equipment.
  • Maintain inventory of test supplies.
  • Perform tests and inspection duties.
  • Record test data on worksheets and perform calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
  • Report test results to field construction personnel and assist in determining causes for material problems.
  • Secure, log, and prepare samples of raw or manufactured materials at various production stages for testing.
  • Drive/travel to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses, and project sites to monitor program status.
  • Work full‑time at a geographically separated location.
  • Perform additional job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent.
  • Material/Process Inspector I

    Experience:

    No prior experience required.
  • Material/Process Inspector II

    Experience:

    1 year of laboratory work, material inspection, or related engineering work.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license (position requires driving a state vehicle).

  • Attention to detail and accuracy in reviewing information.
  • Capability to perform calculations using algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.
  • Proficiency with computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems.
  • Logical reasoning, problem definition, and decision making that support business objectives.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Exposure to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.
  • Exposure to oils and cutting fluids.
  • Required to wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, or other device).
  • Work frequently in small/crawl spaces; manholes; narrow aisles or passageways.
  • Sedentary work: lift up to 10 lbs occasionally; light work: lift up to 20 lbs frequently; medium work: lift up to 50 lbs frequently.
  • Balancing, walking, standing, and moving on various surfaces without falling.
  • Stooping, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and grasping as required.
  • Repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and fingers.
  • Close visual acuity for inspection of small defects; use of measurement devices.
  • Work in inclement weather; required to work weekends and holidays; may work hours other than 8‑5.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment; position is a Safety Impact position subject to random drug testing.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by the employer and comply with safety requirements.
