Job Description

Nurse managers have 24‑hour accountability and responsibility for their respective units and serve as the vital link between the administrative strategic plan and the point of care. The nurse manager is responsible for creating safe, healthy environments that support the work of the health care team and contribute to patient engagement. The role is influential in creating a professional environment and fostering a culture where interdisciplinary team members can contribute to optimal patient outcomes and grow professionally.

Monday – Friday; 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Essential Functions / Performance Expectations
  • Financial Management – data collection, analysis and interpretation to maintain patient safety and improve unit operations, monitor budget, conduct evaluation of productivity, and forecast future revenue and expenses.
  • Human Resources Management and Leadership Skills – maintain staffing needs, apply recruitment techniques, staff selection (interviewing and hiring), performance management, staff development.
  • Performance Improvement – patient and customer engagement, evaluate performance data, respond to outcome measurement findings, patient safety, staff retention, and maintain survey/regulatory readiness.
  • Relationship Management and Influencing Behaviors – crucial conversations, promote team dynamics, mentor and coach staff and colleagues, apply communication principles, foster a healthy work environment, and support cultural competency/diversity.
  • Foundational Thinking Skills – apply systems thinking, understand complex adaptive systems definitions and applications.
  • Technology – understand the effect of IT on patient care and delivery systems to reduce workload and support business decisions.
  • Strategic Management – facilitate change, manage projects, effective meeting management and presentation skills, support shared decision making, and foster a culture of ownership and innovation.
  • Clinical Practice Knowledge – maintain clinical competency for your practice area and stay abreast of current practice standards, challenges, and best practices. Leadership and management is the core function.
  • Personal and Professional Accountability – manage through education and advancement, continuing education, career planning, involvement in professional organizations, certification and personal/professional reflective practice.
  • Coordinate all preceptor program and activities in assigned areas including training, assignments, evaluation of program effectiveness and individual preceptors.
  • Identify learning needs and coordinate corresponding continuing education activities.
  • Participate in organizational learning needs assessment and corresponding continuing education activities.
  • Coordinate professional development program for assigned areas, including promotion and tracking of advanced degrees and specialty certifications.
  • Coordinate implementation activities for education, new processes, new technology, and new products.
  • Ensure competency (initial and ongoing) for assigned area’s skills, new equipment, and protocols.
  • Organize educational classes required by the employing health care institution.
  • Maintain current education files, ensuring completeness to meet all required standards.
  • Coordinate with other Education Coordinators/Professional Development Specialists in CAPE to provide necessary education needs.
  • Assist the Clinical Manager in the Telephone Nurse Call Center (68

    Nurse) with activities as needed.
Education and Experience
  • Current Texas Registered Nurse license required.
  • Bachelor of Science (BSN) in Nursing required.
  • If the nurse does not have a BSN upon hire, the nurse must be currently enrolled in a BSN program with graduation within 12 months of the assigned position.
  • Certification in nursing leadership required (e.g., CNML, NE‑BC, NEA‑BC, CENP).
  • If the nurse does not have certification upon hire, the nurse must obtain leadership certification within 24 months of the assigned position.
  • Master’s degree (MSN, MBA, MHA) preferred.
  • One year of management/leadership experience preferred.
  • Certification in practice area preferred (e.g., CCRN, PCCN, CMSRN, MEDSURG‑BC).
  • Membership in nursing leadership and specialty professional organizations preferred.
  • ACLS required within 12 months of employment.
Physical Requirements
  • The individual must be able to stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift, see, speak, and hear. Lifting is limited to 35 lbs for clinical staff and 50 lbs for non‑clinical staff; an assisted‑lift device or assistance from another individual is required for loads over these limits.
