Crisis Response Team Deputies are Specialized Peace Officers empowered to function as an investigative arm of the State’s Probate Courts. They exercise professional, compassionate, and caring judgment in determining which individuals need detention and psychiatric evaluation. They respond to crisis calls from various agencies and community members involving potentially mentally ill subjects. Responsibilities include de-escalating crisis situations, negotiating, evaluating the need for emergency hospitalization, executing Orders of Protective Custody, transporting individuals to hospitals, and diverting appropriate persons from the Criminal Justice System into the Crisis Response Team System.

Other duties may include responding to crisis situations involving weapons, psychiatric patients, or multiple police interventions; investigating suicide attempts; negotiating barricaded subjects; serving OPC Hearing Notices; transporting individuals; warrantless and warrant-based emergency apprehensions; investigating bizarre behavior; intervening in violence involving mental illness; conducting community education; maintaining reports and records; being on call for after-hours crises; assisting with patrol duties; maintaining equipment;

enforcing laws; and performing any assigned tasks.

Requirements include high school graduation plus at least one year of experience or equivalent education and experience. Skills include police and investigative work, crisis intervention, legal processes, operating computers and vehicles, handling firearms and less-lethal weapons, reading reports, restraining individuals, and effective communication. Physical requirements involve sitting, handling objects, reaching, bending, standing, walking, lifting objects up to 20 pounds regularly, and occasionally lifting 100 pounds or more.

Vision must include close, distance, peripheral, and color vision. The work environment is typically moderate noise.
