Location:

Main Campus - MIDLAND, TX 79705. Position Type:
Full Time. Under general supervision, the officer serves as a commissioned law enforcement officer responsible for the protection, safety, and welfare of students, staff, and visitors, and for the protection of College property.

Responsibilities
  • Patrols are assigned areas by foot, bicycle, or police vehicle to preserve the peace, enforce laws, prevent and detect crime, and respond to complaints.
  • Answers calls regarding service, accidents, disturbances, crime, distress, or illness.
  • Provides information, assistance, and service to students, staff, and the public.
  • Investigates illegal or suspicious activities, persons, and establishments, causes and results of accidents, and completes required reports.
  • Collects and preserves physical evidence, protects crime scene, and reports and records all facts of the incident.
  • Controls and directs traffic to enforce College parking rules and regulations.
  • Mediates and resolves conflicts involving students, department personnel, and community members.
  • Provides escort services as needed and assists state, county, and city law enforcement authorities as requested.
  • Conducts crime prevention programs and presentations for faculty, staff, students, and the surrounding community.
  • Testifies at administrative hearings and in court to present evidence by describing conditions, situations, and actions of individuals for a case.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Licensed as a Peace Officer in Texas and have required in-service training hours to be licensed as a Basic Peace Officer (or above) from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
  • Some law enforcement experience.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Knowledge of police traffic RADAR operation.
  • Must have working knowledge of the Texas Penal Code, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, and Texas Transportation Code.
  • During a 13‑week probationary period, must successfully complete the department’s entire Field Training Program.
  • Complete bi‑annual 40 hours of Texas Peace Officer in‑service training.
  • Able to successfully pass the department daytime, low‑light firearms, and basic patrol rifle course on an annual basis.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license, good driving record, and be insurable on Midland College’s insurance policy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • College/university campus law enforcement.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move or drive to other locations on and off campus.
  • This position may require occasional travel for training, meetings, and events both in and out of town.
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
  • Use of manual dexterity.
  • The person in this position frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information.
  • Must have sufficient stamina to work long hours as necessary.
  • Ability to walk considerable distances during a shift.
  • Must be able to respond to calls at any time of the day or night.
  • Ability to be on an on‑call rotation schedule throughout the year.
  • Capability of working and training under strenuous emergency and non‑emergency conditions.
  • All Midland campuses of the college including the main campus, ATC, and Cogdell.
  • May be assigned to work the day shift, evening shift and/or midnight shift weekdays and/or weekends when manpower needs dictate.
