TrailerMechanic Responsibilities
The Trailer Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing Company-owned bottom drop trailers (“RT Equipment”), including Maxxim and Timpte trailers, to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. This position performs diagnostics, inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs on trailer components including pneumatic systems, suspension systems, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic components, landing gear, and structural assemblies. The Trailer Mechanic also maintains accurate maintenance records in Fleetio and supports a culture of safety, teamwork, and accountability within the maintenance department.
EssentialDuties And Responsibilities
- Perform inspections, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on Maxxim and Timpte bottom drop trailers.
- Troubleshoot and repair air brake systems, suspension components, wheel‑end assemblies, electrical systems, lighting systems, and pneumatic trailer systems.
- Inspect, repair, and replace bottom drop gate components, cylinders, actuators, seals, and related operating mechanisms.
- Perform welding, fabrication, and structural repairs on trailers, hoppers, frames, cross members, and other trailer components as needed.
- Conduct preventative maintenance inspections and services to identify and address potential issues before they result in equipment downtime.
- Diagnose and repair ABS systems and trailer electrical circuits to ensure DOT compliance and operational safety.
- Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities, including labor, parts usage, and completed work orders using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Ensure all repairs and maintenance activities comply with Company policies, DOT regulations, and applicable safety standards.
- Assist with inventory management by identifying parts needs and maintaining adequate stock levels to minimize downtime.
- Collaborate with other maintenance personnel to improve equipment reliability and share technical knowledge.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or trade school training preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in trailer maintenance, heavy‑duty truck and trailer repair, or related mechanical field preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience diagnosing and repairing commercial trailers, preferably bottom drop, hopper, or bulk haul trailers.
- Working knowledge of DOT inspection requirements and trailer maintenance standards.
- Experience repairing and maintaining air brake systems, suspension systems, wheel‑end components, and trailer electrical systems.
- Welding and fabrication experience preferred.
- Experience with Fleetio or other computerized maintenance management systems preferred.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and commitment to safety.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair procedures.
- Ability to provide own basic mechanic tools.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
- Able to lift, carry, push, and pull up 50 lbs and occasionally more with the assistance of medical devices.
