Equipment Operator III
Equipment Operator III (EO3) will perform a variety of tasks including general labor and the operation of all street maintenance equipment at a mastery level. EO3 will perform daily preventative maintenance on motorized equipment and tools. EO3 will have the ability to perform many, if not all, supervisory duties including identifying and solving street and drainage maintenance issues and job tracking functions.
EO3 will be familiar with the City's street and drainage assets and the ability to work without supervision.
Job Duties
- Skilled ability to operate and train others on a variety of specialized heavy equipment:
- Operate top and sides of the asphalt paver
- Jet/Vacuum Combination Truck
- Asphalt Distributer Truck
- Spray Injection Patching Equipment
- Concrete Paving Equipment
- Compactors
- Motor Grader
- Tractor with Haul Trailer (Class A CDL only)
- Track Loader
- Wheel Loader
- Backhoe Loader
- Tractor Mowers
- All other equipment as assigned
- Operate a transit / level to set grade for excavating, establishing sub-grade and setting grade pins for finish grade.
- Performs routine maintenance and repair of City streets and alleys through the operation of light and heavy equipment including walk behind saws, compactors, dump trucks, water trucks, and other equipment related to the maintenance of streets and alleys.
- Performs daily preventative maintenance of equipment.
- Performs manual work and general labor such as making street and curb cuts.
- Maintains tools and equipment.
- Address citizen concerns on the jobsite as needed.
- Maintain the functionality, appearance and safety of the jobsite or facilities in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
- Inspect the overall safety of various job projects. Maintain safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment.
- Ensure all safety equipment is being utilized daily.
- Attends safety meetings monthly.
- Perform pre-trip/post-trip vehicle/equipment inspections and complete daily worksheets for equipment operated.
- Keep jobsite and vehicle/equipment in order. Inspect and maintain assigned equipment. Identify equipment needs for each assigned project.
- Operate heavy equipment in clearing of streets and/or alleys during inclement weather incidents.
- Ability to design and set up a Texas MUTCD compliant work zone with required signs and traffic control.
- Assists in loading and unloading to transported material and equipment.
- Fulfill on-call duties as required and outlined on Transportation's on-call roster.
- Assists with the maintenance of Transportation's building and grounds.
- Assists other City divisions and departments as needed.
- Begin to learn Division's asset management software and timesheets to assist the supervisor when necessary.
- Performs related duties as required.
Ability to sit, climb, bend, stoop, and stand while performing essential job duties. Ability to drive a vehicle to and from work sites. Employee will be exposed to seasonal temperatures while performing maintenance duties. Employee may be exposed to potentially hazardous materials. Employee will be exposed to work zones consisting of high-volume vehicular traffic. Employee must be able to lift working materials.
Required QualificationsMinimum Education & Work Experience
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
- 4 years related experience
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills
Education/ Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years with the City of Midland or possess equivalent experience in related field:
- 5+ years related experience
- 3+ years' experience training on/operating heavy equipment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- General knowledge of safety standard practices governing the operation of vehicles
- Skill to operate controls for required equipment
- Ability to properly use, operate and care for tools, equipment, and materials
- Ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to equipment
- Ability to read and understand vehicle operator's manual
- Ability to read and use city maps and documentation
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid Class A Texas Commercial Driver's License with a Tanker Endorsement
