The Safety & Fleet Manager is responsible for leading, implementing, and continuously improving company safety, fleet, driver-training, transportation-compliance, and related operational-risk programs across all company locations. This position serves as a hands-on resource for Supply Managers, supervisors, drivers, field employees, and leadership, helping ensure safety expectations, fleet standards, training requirements, and compliance obligations are consistently communicated, documented, and followed.

The Safety & Fleet Manager owns the day-to-day administration and oversight of the company safety and fleet programs, including DOT and driver-qualification compliance, vehicle inspections and preventative-maintenance coordination, driver training and road evaluations, Samsara monitoring and coaching, safety audits and inspections, Safety Committee coordination, incident and accident investigation, PPE and safe-work-practice standards, ISNetworld and Veriforce compliance, and customer safety requirements.

A key responsibility of this position is the selection, readiness, development, and ongoing qualification of delivery drivers. The Safety & Fleet Manager conducts initial road tests, identifies training needs, coordinates driver-development plans, conducts follow-up road evaluations, and documents findings and recommendations for operational leadership. The position works closely with branch and operational leaders reporting directly to the VP of Operations.

Primary Responsibilities Safety and Fleet Program Leadership
  • Lead the day-to-day implementation, administration, and continuous improvement of company safety, fleet, driver-training, and transportation-compliance programs.
  • Establish, communicate, and reinforce practical safety, fleet, and driver-performance expectations across all locations.
  • Serve as the primary safety and fleet resource for Supply Managers, supervisors, drivers, field employees, and leadership.
  • Develop and maintain safety, fleet, training, inspection, incident, and compliance documentation.
  • Identify operational risks, recurring trends, training opportunities, and improvement priorities; communicate recommendations to leadership and support timely corrective action.
  • Develop and update safety and fleet policies, procedures, forms, checklists, and training materials as operational needs, regulations, customer requirements, and company practices change.
  • Maintain regular visibility in branches, shops, warehouses, yards, delivery operations, and field work areas.
New-Employee Safety Orientation and SSE Administration
  • Lead safety orientation and job-readiness activities for new employees in coordination with operational leadership.
  • Ensure new employees receive required safety information, PPE expectations, company procedures, customer requirements, and applicable job‑specific training before performing work independently.
  • Administer the Short Service Employee (SSE) program, including tracking, documentation, required check‑ins, training requirements, and completion status.
  • Work with managers and supervisors to monitor SSE employees, identify additional development needs, and verify completion of required safety and job‑readiness milestones.
  • Maintain records verifying required training, certifications, customer requirements, and safety documentation.
Driver Training, Road Testing, and Development
  • Conduct initial road tests for applicable new‑hire delivery drivers to evaluate baseline driving competency and identify training or development needs.
  • Evaluate safe vehicle operation, backing, parking, turning, defensive driving, situational awareness, pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections, load securement, and other company driving expectations.
