Position: Library Assistant (Temporary Part Time)

Starting Hiring Range: $16.82 - $20.60, per hour

This is a temporary, part time position.

Under general supervision, the purpose of the Library Assistant is to provide customer service, maintenance, and technology customer services in the Library Department.

  • Spreads awareness of library services, activities, programs, and resources by staying informed on library offerings and creating flyers, brochures, and social media posts as assigned.
  • Handles daily customer service and materials operations including checking items out, guiding patrons through self-check machines, answering phones and patron inquiries, resolving patron issues, signing up new library patrons, processing returns, placing and processing holds, modifying patron accounts, and collecting and recording payments.
  • Assists patron in library technology and digital resources such as, but not limited to, library computers, printing, self-check machines, catalog stations, databases, online reservation systems, and makerspace equipment.
  • Assists with weeding, collection projects, and cataloging items as assigned.
  • Assists with the daily functions of the library as needed such as emptying the book drop, inspecting and checking returned items in, sorting and shelving materials, completing minor book repairs, and processing materials. This includes monitoring supplies and requesting needed supplies.
  • May assist with programming and spreading awareness of library services, activities, programs, and resources including preparing materials, assisting with displays and décor, and setting up spaces.
  • May designate tasks to Library Pages or volunteers.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university is required.

One (1) year of customer service experience is required.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Fluency in Spanish preferred.

  • Knowledge of and ability to follow city and departmental practices, policies, procedures, systems, and federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, ordinances, and best practices relating to public libraries.
  • Ability to regularly interact with others and exchange and receive of information, providing effective and tactful customer service, and work independently with a high level of discretion.
  • Ability to interact with people in a professional and congenial manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Knowledge of information-finding strategies and reader’s advisory.
  • Knowledge of automated circulation system functions (Koha).
  • Knowledge of Dewey Decimal System classification.
  • Knowledge and familiarity of library materials across various subject areas, fiction and non-fiction, authors, and titles.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, effective, and concise manner, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to troubleshoot simple technology issues on printers, scanners, and computers.
  • Ability to learn and perform basic operational, technical, and office processes.
  • Knowledge, skill, and ability to utilize telephone, fax machines, computers and applicable software and databases daily including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office, Adobe suites, Koha, and social media accounts.
  • Ability to be organized and have efficient management of time and deadlines.
  • Ability to quickly type and input data (35 wpm).
  • Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias, to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, and measurement and to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
  • Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly.
