Scrap Operation Superintendent Basic Function
Responsible for the direction, supervision, coordination, safe and efficient operation of all shredder, scrap yard, rail car dismantling operations and related integral functions at the Midlothian Steel Mill.
Responsibilities- Oversee the entire scrap operations, directing shredder, scrap yard, and rail car dismantling activities.
- Develop and implement standard operating procedures for shredder, scrap yard, and rail car dismantling operations.
- Design, install, modify and maintain all equipment at the shredder, scrap yard, and rail car dismantling operations.
- Manage procurement of car bodies and shredder feed from local scrap dealers, including receiving, inspecting, transferring, and blending scrap for delivery to the Melt Shop Operations.
- Coordinate landfill operations for non‑metallic waste and ensure compliance with environmental permit requirements.
- Handle administrative, HR, accounting, and quality activities for all scrap‑related operations.
- Collaborate with the Melt Shop Superintendent and Corporate Raw Materials Department to ensure performance of job duties.
- Advise and instruct subordinates on objectives, schedules, methods, standards, materials, quality, safety, cost, discipline, personnel policies, and environmental practices.
- Establish production methods, procedures and techniques, anticipate delays and take corrective action.
- Research and recommend capital expenditures, equipment installations or modifications, and design changes for improved efficiency.
- Maintain inventory of operational supplies and coordinate with Purchasing.
- Coordinate and track department team‑building efforts and conduct meetings to recommend cost controls and meet changing requirements.
- 10‑12 years of experience in scrap yard and automobile shredder operations, including procedures, equipment installation, maintenance, and modification.
- Working knowledge of metallurgical qualities of different scrap steel grades meeting ASTM standards.
- 4‑year technical or business management degree or equivalent.
- Proven leadership in scrap processing.
