JOB TITLE:

SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER SALARY LEVEL: NEGOTIATED SALARY SCHEDULE DEPARTMENT: INSTRUCTION

REPORTS TO:

ELEMENTARY/SECONDARY PRINCIPAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or

EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) from four year college or university;
Special Education teaching certificate. Must meet state requirements to be considered a “Highly Qualified” teacher.

LANGUAGE

SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL

SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumferences, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teaches reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, and music to pupils in a classroom, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities based on student’s IEP.
  • Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Evaluates pupils’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
  • Communicates with parents through IEP conferences and other means to discuss pupil’s progress and interpret the school’s programs.
