Adjunct Instructor, Foreign or American Sign Language ) - PTT
Under the general direction and supervision of the Associate Dean and Program Chair, the Adjunct Instructor is responsible for instructing students in various German, Spanish, or American Sign Language classes, depending on credentials and experience. The instructor implements teaching strategies, monitors and evaluates student progress, and maintains accurate student records. This part‑time temporary position is part of a pooled adjunct faculty posting for the 2026–2027 academic year.
EssentialFunctions
- Provide Instruction in Assigned Subject Areas
- Teach courses in German, Spanish, or Sign Language using a variety of instructional strategies (lecture, small groups, demonstrations, computer‑assisted instruction) in classroom, online, hybrid, or lab settings appropriate to student needs.
- Provide Student Evaluation and Recordkeeping
- Prepare and administer evaluation instruments and maintain accurate student records on attendance, achievement, and progress. Assist in gathering and interpreting data for department assessment.
- Remain Current in Events and Developments Related to Subject Areas
- Improve personal teaching and subject knowledge through professional development such as conferences, workshops, technical updates, and personal self‑study.
- Provide Information and Data
- Assist in the preparation of supply and equipment orders, course schedules, book orders, and other necessary reports.
- Promote a Culture of Belonging
- Support and promote an environment of belonging where all students, faculty members, and college employees feel welcomed, valued, and empowered.
- Operate and utilize appropriate technologies as part of the teaching process (e.g., document camera, projector).
- May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
- Perform other college functions and duties as assigned.
- Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required.
Skills and Abilities
- Current knowledge of and ability to teach a language.
- Ability to relate to colleagues, staff, students, and supervisors of diverse backgrounds in a positive and cooperative manner.
- Effective communication skills, including writing, in person, and on the phone.
- Ability to develop and incorporate a variety of teaching strategies and techniques, including computer applications.
- Ability to devise and utilize appropriate evaluation methods for classroom use.
- Basic computer skills.
- Physical ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds for short distances and move tables, chairs, and media equipment when necessary.
- Foreign Language Requirements
- For Spanish and German:
Master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the language. - Or Bachelor’s degree in the language with a minimum of 6 graduate credits and an approved plan to complete a Master’s degree within 2 years, including 18 graduate credits in the subject area.
- For Spanish and German:
- Sign Language Requirements
- For Sign:
Master’s degree with 18 graduate hours in American Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field. - Or Bachelor’s degree with documentation of at least 2 years of experience in the field and possession of the Nebraska Interpreter License.
- For Sign:
- Completed Master’s degree in the field.
- Experience teaching online and/or hybrid formats.
- Experience using technology to teach classes remotely.
- Familiarity with Engaged Learning practices.
