Sr. Firewall Engineer Job Description

This role is responsible for administering next‑generation firewalls, troubleshooting complex security issues, and helping maintain a resilient network environment for agencies and education partners. The ideal candidate is collaborative, analytical, and comfortable working in fast‑moving operational settings.
Position Responsibilities- Configure and maintain enterprise firewalls (Palo Alto, Fortinet, etc.).
- Manage security policies, NAT, VPNs, and network segmentation.
- Monitor logs, investigate alerts, and work with Cyber Command on incident response.
- Troubleshoot advanced connectivity and security issues (Tier 3/Tier
4). - Maintain accurate documentation, rule reviews, and diagrams.
- Use Service Now for tickets, workflows, and approvals.
- Submit, plan, and execute approved changes through established change‑management processes.
- Collaborate with network, cloud, and cybersecurity teams to support deployments and migrations.
- Participate in a 24×7 on‑call rotation as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- 3+ years of enterprise firewall or network security engineering experience.
- Experience with next‑generation firewalls and enterprise policy management.
- Experience with Palo Alto Networks (preferred) or other enterprise firewall platforms.
- Knowledge of OSPF/BGP, VPN tunnels, and HA design.
- Experience with Azure, AWS, or GCP networking.
- Familiarity with Panorama or other centralized firewall management tools.
- Exposure to frameworks such as IRS 1075, NIST CSF, FERPA, or CIPA.
- Experience participating in audits or security assessments.
- Strong documentation and communication skills.
Work is usually preformed in office environment with moderate noise levels. Requires extended periods of sitting, computer use, and phone communication. Occasional standing, walking, lifting, and reaching may be required. Requires travel between statewide agency locations based on operational needs. May be required to lift and transport IT equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
