Basic PurposePositions in this job family are assigned responsibilities for providing direct and indirect non-professional nursing care or outreach services in a clinic, hospital, institution or home setting under nursing or medical supervision. Responsibilities include taking vital signs, obtaining lab specimens, charting, escorting patients, assisting with activities of daily living, and ordering and receiving supplies.
Typical Functions- Perform direct nursing tasks including taking vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living and hygiene needs, and obtaining certain lab specimens.
- Chart observations and activities, reporting pertinent changes in the patient’s condition.
- Perform delegated or other specialized functions as educationally prepared.
- Escort patients to and from various destinations.
- Assist in maintaining and providing a clean, safe environment.
- Order, receive and store supplies and perform basic clerical functions.
- Participate in follow‑up activities and tracking clients, schedule appointments and perform other related tasks.
- Provide case finding and recruitment of at‑risk persons for comprehensive health services.
- Perform other related duties as assigned consistent with the responsibilities of the position and agency operations.
Employees perform a full range of patient care duties or services under nursing or medical direction. This includes taking vital signs, obtaining lab specimens, assisting with activities of daily living, observing and charting patient information, and reporting appropriate information to supervisors. It may also include providing various outreach services to clients within the community.
Education and ExperienceOne year of experience in providing patient care.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies- Knowledge of the English language to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of public health services available to the community.
- Knowledge of record keeping and techniques of interviewing.
- Knowledge of basic nursing practices, techniques, sanitation, personal hygiene, and medical terminology.
- Ability to record observations and activities, follow oral and written directions, establish and maintain effective working relationships, and apply basic nursing techniques.
- Proficiency in the English language sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Valid Oklahoma driver’s license and/or Class C (CDL) Commercial Driver’s License may be required.
- Some agencies may require translation of health information for non-English speaking clients.
- Current certification in good standing by the Oklahoma State Department of Health as a Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) for Level I and II;
Level III requires certification as a Certified Medication Aide Advanced (CMA‑A); all levels may require Certified Medication Aide (CMA) certification. - Conditional offer of employment may require a physical examination with requirements such as lifting/carrying 50 pounds and pushing or pulling a maximum force of 25 pounds.
