Under the general direction and supervision of the Associate Dean and Dean of Advanced Technologies and Skilled Trades, the Instructor is responsible for developing and implementing courses in the Professional Truck Driver Training program. Courses may be delivered in a classroom, laboratory, online, or hybrid (online & face‑to‑face) format. This is a full‑time regular position.
Responsibilities- Write course objectives, implement appropriate teaching strategies, and advise students.
- Monitor and evaluate student progress and maintain accurate and timely records.
- Provide instruction in assigned subject areas such as Commercial Carrier Driver Training, Vehicle Inspection Training, and CDL Testing.
- Utilize a variety of instructional strategies including lectures, small groups, demonstrations, and driving instruction on campus and on public roads and highways.
- Prepare and administer student evaluation instruments.
- Stay current in events and developments related to the subject area; pursue professional development through in‑service activities, conferences, workshops, and self‑study.
- Participate in division and college meetings and committees, including the Program Workforce Leadership Team.
- Maintain the security of college vehicles, equipment, facilities, and materials.
- Serve as an Academic Advisor for students, advising on academic progress, course requirements, and policies.
- Develop and revise course curriculum and educational materials, including objectives, content, descriptions, and instructional strategies.
- Act as a member of the Professional Truck Driver Training Program, Transportation Division, Instructional Division, and SCC teams.
- Support recruitment, placement, and orientation activities.
- Administer the commercial driver’s license examination for backing test and road test.
- Collaborate with the Vice President of Instruction or designee to develop individualized development plans for new instructors.
- Promote a culture of belonging and a safe, respectful environment for all students, faculty, and staff.
- Operate audio‑visual equipment, computers, and the learning management system.
- Assist other programs as a technical advisor when required.
- Perform other teaching and college duties as assigned, including substitute instruction and outside‑of‑hours work if necessary.
- Current knowledge and experience in driving conditions, hazard perception, speed management, traffic reading, coupling and uncoupling trailers, and proficiency in backing, shifting, and concourse driving.
- At least two years of work experience as an over‑the‑road driver of a commercial tractor‑trailer.
- Positive and cooperative communication with colleagues, staff, students, and supervisors.
- Effective communication skills in writing, in person, and on the phone.
- Ability to design and employ diverse teaching strategies and evaluation methods.
- Knowledge and skill in operating various tractor types with manual and automatic transmissions.
- Ability to work outdoors in temperatures below 10 °F and above 100 °F for up to one hour.
- Ability to enter and exit cabover and conventional tractors and perform all required driving and inspection procedures.
- Physical ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds for short distances and move tables, chairs, and media equipment.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to meet essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Graduate from an industry‑recognized Professional Truck Driver Training program.
- Previous teaching experience.
- Additional industry‑recognized training and/or certifications.
$57,912 per year.
BenefitsEligible employees (full‑time, FTE ≥ 0.75) receive SCC Ben Dollars. Employees elect a health insurance option; if the cost exceeds the available SCC Ben Dollars, the excess is withheld from the paycheck. Unused SCC Ben Dollars are paid in cash at $0.93 per $1.00 benefit dollar. All amounts are subject to taxation. The benefits program does not include contributions to the Retirement Savings Plan – Group Retirement Account (GRA).
