Position: Border Patrol Agent (BPA) - Entry Level

Overview

Border Patrol Agent (BPA) Entry Level – a career worthy of a mission. USBP is hiring immediately for full‑time, entry‑level Border Patrol Agent positions. The role offers excellent base pay, exceptional benefits, job stability, and up to $60,000 in additional incentives.

Salary & Benefits
  • Annual base salary: GL‑5 $ 49,739 – GL‑7 $ 89,518 per year.
  • Recruitment Incentive: up to $20,000. First $10,000 paid upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy; remaining $10,000 awarded for accepting a prioritized location such as Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Freer, Hebbronville, TX;
    Lordsburg, NM; or Ajo, AZ.
  • Retention Incentive: up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years for newly appointed Border Patrol Agents.
  • Duty locations available at the time of offer may include the Southwest Border, including prioritized locations.
  • Duty location may impact pay rates; locality pay is higher in some areas.
  • A fully trained BPA may be eligible for an additional 25% of base pay under the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014.
  • Annual and sick leave program, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan (a retirement plan similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k)).

  • North, South, and West Eagle Pass;
    Carrizo Springs;
    Uvalde;
    El Paso.
  • Alamogordo, Clint, Deming, Fort Hancock, Las Cruces.
  • Lordsburg, Santa Teresa, Ysleta, El Centro.
  • El Centro, Indio, Calexico.
  • Grand Forks Sector Stations:
    Pembina, Havre.
  • Houlton Sector Stations:
    Calais, Fort Fairfield, Jackman, Rangeley, Van Buren.
  • Laredo Sector Stations:
    Laredo South, Cotulla, Hebbronville, Laredo West, Freer, Laredo North, Zapata.
  • Rio Grande Valley Sector Stations:
    Rio Grande City, Fort Brown, McAllen, Brownsville, Falfurrias, Weslaco, Kingsville, Harlingen.
  • San Diego Sector Stations:
    Boulevard, Brownfield, Campo, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, Murrieta, San Clemente.
  • Spokane Sector Stations:
    Colville, Curlew, Metaline Falls, Oroville, Swanton.
  • Beecher Falls, Burke, Champlain, Newport, Richford.
  • Tucson Sector Stations:
    Ajo, Tucson, Nogales, Douglas.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration or customs laws and inspecting documents and possessions for citizenship or violations.
  • Preventing and apprehending undocumented non‑citizens and smugglers at the borders through surveillance from covert positions, including infrared scopes during night operations.
  • Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry of persons or contraband.
  • Performing farm, building, traffic, city patrols, and transportation checks.
  • Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways using government assets such as vehicles, horses, vessels, watercraft, off‑road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles.
Qualifications

GL‑5 Grade Level

  • One (1) year of general work experience that demonstrates ability to take charge, make sound decisions, maintain composure in stressful situations, learn regulations, and gather concise information through questioning, observation, and examination.
  • Or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Or combination of general work experience and completed college education.

GL‑7 Grade Level

  • One (1) year of specialized work experience that demonstrates skills necessary to: make sound judgments in the use of firearms, deal effectively with people in a courteous and tactful manner, analyze information rapidly, make prompt decisions, make arrests after required training, and maintain contact with a network of informants.
  • Or a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (class standing, GPA 3.0+ or honor society).
  • Or one full year of graduate‑level education in a field related to law enforcement (criminal justice, homeland security, etc.).
  • Or combination of experience and education.
