Overview
Essex Industries is a multi-site aerospace and defense manufacturer serving military and commercial customers worldwide. The Manufacturing Engineer designs and improves manufacturing processes, tooling, and test equipment to support efficient production. The Production Supervisor leads daily manufacturing operations for aerospace mechanical and electro-mechanical assemblies, ensuring quality, compliance, and on-time delivery. This role provides hands-on technical leadership, supports engineering changes, and drives continuous improvement to meet regulatory, customer, and internal standards.
ResponsibilitiesHands-On Technical Oversight
- Provide on-the-floor technical guidance for mechanical and electro-mechanical assemblies, wiring, harnessing, soldering, bonding, and mechanical integration.
- Interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and assembly drawings to ensure proper execution.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical assembly issues in real time to prevent production delays.
- Assist technicians with complex builds, rework, and first-time assemblies.
- Verify torque, crimp, solder, riveting, etc. to aerospace standards.
- Support functional testing and verification and assist with failure analysis and corrective actions.
- Ensure strict adherence to configuration control and revision levels.
- Lead daily startup meetings and assign work based on schedule priorities.
- Monitor work-in-process (WIP) on the floor and adjust resources to eliminate bottlenecks.
- Track hourly production performance and take immediate action to close performance gaps.
- Coordinate closely with Production Control to meet on-time delivery requirements.
- Escalate technical or material constraints promptly and work toward resolution.
- Ensure all work meets AS9100 and customer-specific aerospace requirements.
- Conduct in-process inspections and workmanship audits.
- Lead root cause investigations for nonconformances and rework issues.
- Promote first-pass yield improvement and a zero-defect mindset.
- Support internal and external audits, including customer and source inspections.
- Provide direct supervision, coaching, and mentorship to electro-mechanical technicians.
- Train employees on proper assembly techniques, blueprint reading, and workmanship standards.
- Maintain and develop a technical skills matrix for the team.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide continuous performance feedback.
- Reinforce accountability, safety awareness, and professional conduct on the shop floor.
- Identify inefficiencies in workflow, layout, tooling, or methods and implement improvements.
- Lead 5S initiatives and maintain organized, audit-ready work areas.
- Participate in Kaizen events and continuous improvement projects.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering to improve assembly processes and documentation.
- Enforce all safety policies.
- Address unsafe behaviors or conditions immediately.
- Promote a culture of safety and ownership.
- Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in aerospace electro-mechanical assembly.
- 3+ years of supervisory or technical lead experience in a regulated manufacturing environment.
- Strong proficiency in blueprint reading and electrical schematic interpretation.
- Working knowledge of AS9100 and aerospace quality requirements.
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems.
- Demonstrated troubleshooting skills in electro-mechanical assemblies.
