Job Description

Responsible for the testing of laboratory specimens and the reporting of results in all areas of the core laboratory. Automation and middleware experience is a plus. Follows laboratory policies and procedures and maintains quality control practices in the laboratory.

I. Major Responsibilities
1. Specimen Collection
  • Collect blood samples using appropriate venipuncture skills for various situations and age groups, including adult, pediatric, and neonatal populations.
  • Demonstrate proper professional conduct and follow specific sample collection techniques as per department protocol.
  • Achieve a 95% success rate in venipuncture without complications.
  • Ensure appropriate comfort level for patients throughout the process.
  • Effectively communicate any difficulties or problems with specimen collection to the supervisor and other department personnel.
2. Specimen Receiving and Processing
  • Document receipt of specimens accurately and timely in the computer system and ensure redistribution to appropriate destinations.
  • Prioritize specimen distribution as needed (e.g., STAT or CSF samples).
  • Complete specimen preparation for testing within the standard period of time and document any irregularities encountered during the process.
3. Specimen Preparation & Distribution
  • Evaluate specimen for integrity, perform any pretreatment, and prepare solutions and reagents as needed.
  • Route specimens to appropriate reference labs according to protocol.
  • Develop mechanisms to address requests for uncommon lab tests.
  • When implementing a new system, inform all involved personnel of the process created.
4. Assessment
  • Complete assessment of instrument and reagent function by following QC/Calibration protocol, recording and documenting steps.
  • Perform daily/weekly maintenance as per department/manufacturer recommendations.
  • Document acceptable limits, identify problem areas, and maintain appropriate records of QC/remedial action performed.
  • Communicate QC irregularities with the supervisor as per protocol.
  • Document all maintenance procedures in a standardized format.
5. Planning & Performance of Tests
  • Perform tests with precision and accuracy.
  • Know critical values, verify and record all test results before broadcasting, and keep inventory lists updated.
  • Ensure accurate test results in a timely manner following department turn‑around‑time protocol.
  • Recognize abnormal or unusual outcomes and initiate investigation of the process, such as reviewing previous results and consulting with supervisor or Pathologist before broadcasting results.
  • Implement troubleshooting guide for instrument malfunction and complete tasks with technical support as needed.

II. Position Qualifications

License/Certification/Education (Required)

  • AAS degree in Medical Technology from an accredited school, MLS or equivalent.

License/Certification/Education (Preferred)

  • BS in Medical Technology degree.
  • MLT (ASCP) or MT (ASCP) certification.
