The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing blood draws and specimen collection with expertise and professionalism. This role ensures patient comfort, accurate specimen preparation, and compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The phlebotomist plays a critical role in supporting diagnostic testing and delivering high-quality care across diverse patient populations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform venipuncture and specimen collection (blood, urine, fecal) with minimal discomfort to patients.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport while maintaining integrity and required temperature conditions.
  • Maintain accurate patient information and update records in compliance with protocols.
  • Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Explain specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients.
  • Comply with OSHA, DEP, and infection control regulations.
  • Wear appropriate PPE and adhere to safety standards.
  • Record maintenance data, perform decontamination, and ensure equipment readiness.
  • Answer telephone inquiries and provide laboratory results when appropriate.
  • Attend annual department trainings and participate in ongoing skill development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a recognized phlebotomy training program.
  • Demonstrated experience in blood draws and specimen handling.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in labeling and documentation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with patients across diverse demographics.
  • Must have at least 2 years of recent experience in the specialty within the past 2 years.
Preferred Qualifications (if any)
  • Prior experience in a hospital, clinic, or laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • Experience handling multiple specimen types and complex test orders.
Certifications (if any)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – preferred depending on facility requirements.
