About the Role

Works under the direction of the Histology Manager, in conjunction with the Pathology Assistant, to perform a variety of histological functions in the production of surgical, cytological, and autopsy slides in preparation for diagnosis. May be asked to learn and assist with grossing functions in the absence of the Pathology Assistant.

Major Responsibilities Specimen Processing
  • Process, embed, section, and stain tissue blocks using histology techniques.
  • Perform special procedures including tissue orientation and routine H&E staining.
  • Prepare all reagents and stains used in special stain procedures.
Supply Management
  • Inform supervisor when inventory supplies are low.
  • Distribute 10% formalin to departments and off‑site locations as requested.
  • Distribute cassettes and biopsy sponges to departments as needed.
Quality Control
  • Perform quality control checks on equipment and staining procedures.
  • Ensure proper disposal of specimens and monitor chemical exposure annually.
  • Conduct daily QC on routine and special stains.
Computer and Recordkeeping
  • Enter surgical specimens and CPT codes into Meditech Path Menu.
  • Edit specimen information and create histology logs for record retention.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation.
Age‑Specific Competency
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development stages to patient care.
  • Demonstrate age‑appropriate communication and support.
Position Qualifications License/Certification/Education

Required:

  • Associate of Science (AS) degree

Preferred:

  • HT (ASCP) certification
Experience/Skills

Preferred:

  • Two years of experience in a histology lab

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
