Primary Function

Operate grain etch lines and caustic autoclaves, ensure the parts properly etched and core/shell cleaned per procedures, loading and offloading parts from holding baskets and fixtures, load baskets into and out of etch tanks, controlling etch time, ensure the lines running correctly per procedures, other related tasks to operate grain etch lines as defined by HIMCO procedures. Fill out the reports and work sheets.

Responsible for the correct mixing of these chemicals, monitoring of bathes and addition of chemicals when required. Responsible for the removal of spent acid, labeling and correct storage of hazardous waste and cleaning of acid tanks and making new baths.

Grain etch tanks, caustic autoclave, various holding baskets and fixture, timer, PH-meter, other chemical analyzing equipment

Working Procedure
  • Operate all equipment as described above.
  • Prepare parts and related paperwork for grain etch, inspection and metallography.
  • Perform bench chemistry analysis of acidic and caustic solutions (e.g. titrations, PH, etc.)
  • Daily contact with supervisor. Occasional discussion of disposition of rejected material.
  • Load and unload castings from baskets or fixtures
  • Load, transfer, and unload baskets or fixtures in/out of tanks using overhead hoist
  • Rinse parts using spray wand. Dry parts with compressed air
  • Ensure parts are processed according to specified recipe
  • Set and verify cycle timers and temperature settings for all tanks
  • Visually inspect parts for contamination before processing
  • Visually inspect parts for water spots or contamination after processing
  • Take samples from solutions, and provide to the lab for testing
  • Make adjustments to solutions based on laboratory analysis
  • Change out spent solutions, clean tanks, and refill system with new solutions
  • Maintain proper storage and labeling of all process materials and waste materials
  • Select recipes from equipment control panel (may need to modify recipes with engineering support)
  • Verify cycles meet requirements of recipe
  • Set and verify cycle timers on part washer and dryer
  • Set and verify temperature on parts washer
  • Visually inspect parts for excess remaining ceramic material
  • Collect process samples…
