- Wildfire Risk Engineer – Supports development and application of wildfire risk models for strategic planning and regulatory reporting. Key tasks include:
- Provide electric system engineering expertise for development and maintenance of wildfire risk models.
- Analyze ignition risks during various system conditions (PSPS events, extreme weather, enhanced fast trip, etc.).
- Update risk maps with new data inputs and model improvements.
- Validate and document modeling inputs, assumptions, and outputs.
- Advance risk analysis workflows and tools.
- Assist with regulatory filings and reporting related to wildfire risk methodologies.
- Integrate modeling outputs into annual WSS strategy updates.
- Contribute engineering insights to support annual WSS updates.
- Develop prioritization processes based on modeling results.
- Track and analyze effectiveness of wildfire mitigations to inform continuous improvement.
- Ensure risk-informed mitigation strategies align with regulatory compliance.
- Prepare technical studies and reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Recommend improvements to risk methodologies and tool enhancements.
- Participate in company emergency response activities as assigned.
- Senior Wildfire Risk Engineer – Develops advanced wildfire risk models and provides strategic decision‑making support. Key tasks include:
- Develop and maintain quantitative wildfire risk models.
- Analyze data for ignition risks, reliability impacts, fire spread modeling, probability and consequence calculations, and mitigation solutions.
- Integrate GIS and spatial data into risk assessment models.
- Support continuous improvement of risk analysis tools.
- Validate and document data, modeling assumptions, inputs, outputs, and methodologies.
- Translate complex risk analysis into actionable insights for the WF team and WSS refinement.
- Support portfolio prioritization using modeling results.
- Maintain awareness of WSS execution and system performance for incorporation into risk modeling.
- Interpret new regulatory requirements and ensure compliance alignment.
- Prepare risk analyses and reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Recommend improvements to risk methodologies and modeling data.
- Participate in company emergency response activities as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience: 5‑7 years (Wildfire Risk Engineer) or 8+ years (Senior Wildfire Risk Engineer) in system and engineering analysis, risk modeling, quantitative analysis, or wildfire research. Experience with utilities, emergency planning, or risk strategy teams is preferred.
- Knowledge: Understanding of distribution and transmission grid design; wildfire risk assessment and prioritization techniques; wildfire mitigation strategies; utility infrastructure; regulatory compliance; statistical modeling; GIS integration; asset performance data; and enterprise risk frameworks.
- Skills: Ability to synthesize complex datasets; manage large datasets; communicate technical insights; conceptualize new ideas; conduct analytical, conceptual, and administrative tasks; strong interpersonal skills; and proficiency in Python, Excel, GIS, Monte Carlo or statistical tools.
- Specific technical skills: Experience with GIS, scenario forecasting, automation of risk analysis workflows, machine learning, and data visualization tools.
