Full‑time position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Plant Extinction Prevention (PEP) Program, located on Kauai, Hawai‘i. Monthly salary: $4,071. Closing date:
August 5, 2026.
- Implement rare plant conservation actions to prevent extinction of critically rare species (fewer than 50 wild plants remaining).
- Conduct field work on DLNR, private land, and watershed partnership sites on Kauai.
- Assist in rare plant collection, monitoring, surveying, protection, and alien plant and animal control (weed, invertebrate/vertebrate pest, ungulate, fencing).
- Drive to field sites; plan and document work including scheduling, logistics, and daily field work.
- Record and analyze field data using GPS and computer‑aided programs, complying with federal and state regulations on endangered species, safety, health, and pesticides.
- Progress with increasing independence and responsibility as the employee advances through levels.
- Associate’s Degree in Biological or Environmental Science from an accredited community college or university.
- Three to five (3–5) years of experience dealing with biological resources in Hawai‘i, documented in an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, or non‑profit. A Bachelor’s Degree in a natural science or communication‑related field may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
- Good knowledge of vegetation or rare plant monitoring techniques and data collection, herbicide use, and weed control techniques.
- Ability to use GPS, altimeter, compass, and maps; computer literate.
- Valid driver’s license with personal vehicle insurance (mandatory if personal vehicle is required). Must drive a 4‑wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.
- Must complete a basic helicopter safety course within six (6) months of hire.
- Must possess or obtain American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR within three (3) months of hire and maintain it.
- Must complete mandatory Hazard Communication, chainsaw, and rappelling trainings within specified time frames.
Able and willing to work under dirty, muddy, rainy or sunny, hot or cold, and strenuous outdoor conditions; hike up to 10 miles/day, carry up to 35 pounds, and camp up to four (4) days in remote areas.
Secondary Qualifications- Experience in managing rare and endangered species and ecosystems on Kauai.
- Knowledge of endangered species management, safety, and logistical requirements for field operations and familiarity with local environmental laws.
- Experience in weed and ungulate control, helicopter operations in Hawai‘i, chainsaw use, and pesticide application (current State of Hawai‘i certification required).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access; ability to record biological data with GPS and download data to a computer.
