Summary:
Under direction of the Director of Public Works, or designee, the Associate Engineer performs engineering services in the public setting, collaborating with multiple stakeholders.
Examples of assignments include:
* Serves as lead for staff committees
* Responds to inquiries regarding topics such as retaining walls, storm drains, sanitary sewer, sidewalks, right of way encroachments, etc.
* Leads Steps, Lanes and Paths activities
* Addresses traffic operational and safety concerns
Plans, develops, schedules, budgets and implements assigned projects that may include:
* Streets and Sanitary Sewers Rehabilitation Program
* City parks and facility restoration/rebuilding projects
* Corridor and traffic improvements
* Landslide Repairs Program
* Curb, gutter, sidewalk, and curb-ramp rehabilitation
* Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Civil or related field)
* 3-7+ years of experience (ideally within public works)
* Solid project management experience, preferably in municipal/public works environments
* Experience coordinating with contractors, consultants, and/or maintenance teams
* Strong organizational skills - critical for managing multiple projects and stakeholders
* Customer-service mindset - takes ownership of projects/issues and works independently
* Strong communication skills with ability to interface with the public and multiple stakeholders
* Ability to manage a wide range of engineering and public-facing issues with accountability and professionalism
Nice to have:
* Experience working for or with a public municipality (direct or as a consultant)
Familiarity with public processes:
* Presenting to community members/boards
* Navigating approvals up to city council level
* Experience in smaller municipalities (preferred)
Background in:
* Public works projects
* Construction
* Inspections (ability to inspect and plan is a plus)
Openness to varied backgrounds:
* Structural engineers (aligned with current team experience)
* Project/Project Management Engineers with hands-on delivery experience
* Experience managing capital improvement programs or multiple projects
Familiarity with:
* Stormwater systems
* ADA compliance
* Traffic engineering
* Right-of-way regulations
* Design-build or similar program experience (e.g., fire access projects)
* Ability to develop creative, practical solutions to infrastructure/community challenges
Systems & Technical Experience (Bonus):
* AutoCAD
* Civil 3D
GIS tools:
* Ability to produce public-facing sketches, maps, or diagrams
* Familiarity working with consultants for design execution (not necessarily hands-on design-heavy)
