About the OpportunityWe are excited to recruit for a full-time, permanent Permit Technician in the Community Development Department. The Permit Technician is responsible for processing construction permits, assisting customers at the public counter and over the phone, coordinating plan review activities, and supporting the City's building permit process.
YourKey Responsibilities May Include:
- Permit Processing: Accept permit applications and construction plans, verify application completeness, calculate permit fees, and issue eligible over-the-counter permits.
- Customer Service: Assist property owners, contractors, architects, developers, and the public by explaining permit requirements, City procedures, and the status of plan reviews.
- Plan Review Coordination: Route plans for review, monitor plan check progress, maintain permit records, and coordinate with City staff to support timely project completion.
- Administrative Support: Process refunds, log and track complaints, maintain accurate records, schedule inspections, and utilize computerized permitting systems to support daily operations.
Any combination of experience and education that provides the desired knowledge and abilities to duties. Typically, this is obtained through a high school education and at least one (1) year of experience in a building or planning department.
Licenses & Certifications- ICC Permit Technician Certification (or equivalent), or the ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire.
- Valid California Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to read and understand construction plans and architectural drawings.
- Knowledge of permit processing procedures, building terminology, and general office practices.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to explain City regulations, ordinances, and procedures clearly and professionally.
- Proficiency with computers and the ability to perform accurate mathematical calculations.
