Department Chair, Chemistry, Physics & Mathematics
Georgia College & State University seeks a chair for the Department of Chemistry, Physics & Mathematics. The position is a 12-month on-campus appointment reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. The department chair provides leadership for the department and works collaboratively with the faculty to meet the academic needs of students and foster excellence in programs, instruction, scholarly activity, and service.
The department chair must have the ability to effectively manage course scheduling, budgets, personnel, and facilities; lead curriculum development; and carry out other department leadership functions, in addition to performing other duties as assigned. The chair supervises all employees in the department and administers yearly performance evaluations. The chair assesses and recommends faculty candidates for vacant positions and makes recommendations regarding faculty reappointment, tenure, and promotion.
Responsibilities include implementing the department's mission, supervising all employees, collaborating with department faculty, maintaining public and alumni relations, budgeting, teaching a half-load, participating in program review, and managing department and college facilities.
Required qualifications include a Ph.D in a discipline represented in the department, excellent leadership and communication skills, a strong commitment to the college and university mission, a record of effective teaching and scholarly activity, and meeting SACSCOC accreditation requirements.
Preferred qualifications include at least three years of academic leadership experience, a record of success in academic leadership, experience with curriculum development, strategic planning, student learning outcomes assessment, personnel management, alumni relations, and donor cultivation, and a record of excellent business skills, fiscal responsibility, and organizational skills.
