Job Summary

The Police Officer is a regular position providing general law enforcement and service‑related duties for the Georgia College & State University community. Employees in this role must possess, or be able to obtain and maintain, certification as a peace officer pursuant to the rules of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council. The position requires knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, along with policies and procedures of the Board of Regents, the University, and the Department of Public Safety.

Employees must exercise independent judgment and decision‑making within prescribed limits and demonstrate professionalism amid emotionally or physically stressful events.

Responsibilities Patrol – 50
  • Conduct routine vehicle, foot, bicycle, and alternative patrol of Georgia College & State University properties and surrounding area pursuant to statutory jurisdictions.
  • Detect and deter crime, criminal activity, and suspicious activity on Georgia College & State University properties.
  • Respond to calls of service and assist as needed.
  • Investigate accidents, crimes, and other complaints.
  • Issue citations.
  • Direct traffic and assist stranded motorists by providing unlocks and/or jump‑starts.
Law Enforcement – 15
  • Utilize sound discretion and decision‑making skills when determining appropriate responses to violations of federal, state, local, and traffic laws.
  • Arrest, process, and transport suspects accused of violating laws.
  • Appear and testify in campus judicial and court hearings as needed.
Reporting – 5
  • Provide adequate documentation of public safety actions, including incident reports, arrest and booking reports, use‑of‑force reports, supplemental reports, traffic citations, and other documentation related to safety and security initiatives on campus.
  • Document may include written reports, diagrams, sketches, and other representations of reported circumstances.
Safety and Security Activities – 15
  • Perform relevant safety and security functions that enhance public safety within the Georgia College & State University community.
  • Develop positive police‑community relations and facilitate the physical security of campus properties.
  • Provide first aid in response to medical distress and enhance emergency response to a variety of natural and man‑made hazards.
  • Assist other law enforcement agencies as needed and requested.
  • Work special events, including sporting events, social events, parades, and large gatherings.
  • Follow departmental safety and risk management policies in performance of work.
  • Maintain, repair, and clean tools, equipment, and work areas.
Communications – 10
  • Effectively communicate with other departmental personnel in the field and serve as a reserve communications officer in the Georgia College & State University communications center.
Other – 5
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements

Must possess a high school diploma or accredited GED equivalent.
