We are hiring Pipeline Inspectors I to support our client and growing team in Maryland.
Position SummaryThe Pipeline Inspector I is responsible for the inspection and reporting on the construction of new water and sewer main line installation, new and renewed service lateral connections, water and sewer relocation, paving replacement, and landscaping restoration. The Inspector I will be keeping accurate records of quantities and materials being installed to ensure proper payment to the contractor.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Ensuring that all work is done in accordance with the WSSC contract documents and procedures.
- Inspects water and sewer main line construction, new water and sewer lateral connection installations, water and sewer lateral connection renewals, water‑main rehabilitation including cleaning and lining, sewer and manhole rehabilitation, paving, sod, and landscaping restoration.
- Checks for proper water and sewer tap installations.
- Conducts compaction testing of backfilled soils during and after completion of the work.
- Ensures that required safety precautions are taken, and proper traffic control is adhered to.
- Schedule water main shutdowns, locate and operate valves, perform chlorination samplings, and other items necessary for the execution of contract work.
- Advises contractors of deviations from the provisions of the contract and offers assistance to perform work properly.
- Approves materials on‑site for proper quality and reports defects, with the ability and authority to reject materials and workmanship.
- Review and maintain As‑Built information throughout the construction period.
- Documents contractor's activities and progress through daily reports, photographs, and record sketches in order to document accurate payment and claim evaluation.
- Performs visual sewer main and manhole final inspection, oversees sewer air and mandrel testing, televising of sewer lateral connections, hydrostatic water main testing, and prepares reports of findings.
- Inspects restoration of areas disturbed during construction.
- Distributes notifications to customers impacted by construction activities.
- Prepares and transcribes paving and landscaping tickets.
- Verifies grading and alignment of water mains, sewer lines, and appurtenances to assure the work is done in accordance with the requirements of the contract.
- Serves as liaison with other agencies (local, State, Federal), internal WSSC departments, and contractors regarding construction projects to ensure proper notification and procedures are followed depending on the jurisdiction.
- Assist contractors with locating mainline pipes, and laterals connections, through record review and use of M‑scopes or wands.
- Studies and investigates assigned construction project packages (plans, job specs, permits, etc.) and reviews findings with the Contract Manager, Inspector II and/or the project contractor.
- Prepares final house connection and field as‑builts for each job completed.
The Pipeline Inspector I qualifications for this role include the following:
- High School diploma or equivalent and 2 years experience inspecting underground water/sewer pipeline construction.
- Alternatively, 3 years of progressively responsible experience in maintenance, construction, or sub‑professional engineering work. Experience should include any combination of water/sewer construction, sewer‑main lining, sewer manhole lining, replacement by excavation, and pipe bursting.
- Has inspected three (3) or more water/sewer contracts within the past five (5) years.
- Obtain Underground Utility Erosion and Sediment Control Yellow Card within one year.
