Job Summary

Under the direction of the supervising teacher or administrator, Temporary Support Assistants assist teachers with the physical, emotional, behavioral, and instructional needs of students at the Preschool/PreK, elementary, and secondary grade levels. They supervise students throughout the school day, provide instructional support, collect data, and implement behavior strategies as directed.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities
  • Participate in routine supervision of students during the school day within the school building and community settings, including assisting on/off bus, lifting, and monitoring student entry and exit.
  • Assist students with developing social behavior, personal hygiene, and self-help skills, including toileting, feeding, and grooming as assigned.
  • Support students during instruction and curriculum tasks, reinforce subjects introduced by teachers in one‑on‑one or small groups, and implement instructional plans and activities as directed.
  • Observe and manage student behavior in classrooms, lunch areas, playgrounds, and other learning environments according to approved procedures.
  • Gather student performance data on instructional and behavioral goals and provide data to the supervising teacher.
  • Implement behavior strategies and supports for students with social, emotional, and behavioral concerns.
  • Follow AACPS policies and procedures while assisting students and staff inside the building and on off‑site training activities.
  • Participate in professional development, including workshops and in‑service training for specialized care needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Minimum Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
  • Formal academic courses or training in child development with specific applications to special education preferred.
  • Demonstrated patience and ability to work with students possessing physical, mental, emotional, and/or multiple disabilities.
  • Reliable, regular, and predictable attendance essential for direct in-person service provision.
  • Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to diverse learner needs.
  • Effective communication skills with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite – Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Licenses and Certifications
  • Eligibility for a Driver’s License (DL) Class C Non‑Commercial issued by Maryland or state of legal residence required.
  • Daily reliable transportation required.
Driving Requirements
  • Driving required for legitimate board business within the scope of employment.
  • Personal vehicle required.
Physical Demands
  • Standing, walking, sitting, keyboarding, talking, hearing, and driving as needed per job duties.
  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds as required.
  • Other tasks as required by the duties and responsibilities of the position.
Travel Requirements
  • Approximately 20% of daily travel within the county to assist at other schools, parks, and libraries as needed.
