The DNREC Division of Air Quality monitors and regulates emissions to the air. Air monitoring is supported by the Ambient Air Monitoring Program which operates a network of monitoring stations throughout the State. This monitoring network measures pollutants for which national air quality standards have been defined to protect public health, welfare, and the environment. The Ambient Air Monitoring Program is supported by Air Monitoring Quality Assurance Program, which ensures the quality of data produced.

Both programs assist in analysis and distribution of the air monitoring data.

Summary Statement

This Environmental Scientist II is a mid-level position in the Air Monitoring group. They will assist in all aspects of technical support and will work closely with group managers to operate the State’s air monitoring network. The incumbent will help to develop solutions to analytical problems, verify and correct issues, and validate the performance of new and existing monitoring equipment. They will be responsible for operating continuous sample collection and collecting field samples throughout the year and must be able to work outdoors.

They will work with the Quality Assurance group as needed to assist with the planning, design, execution, and analysis of special air monitoring studies. The ESII will perform Level 1 Quality Assurance of data collected at assigned sites.

Preferred Qualification

Applicants who do not possess the preferred qualification will still be eligible to compete for this position if job requirements are met.

  • Six months experience in operating and maintaining ambient air quality monitoring equipment.
Essential Functions

  • Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
  • Performs statistical analysis of data.
  • Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
  • Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.
Job Requirements for Environmental Scientist II
  • Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
  • One year of experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
  • One year of experience in interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • One year of experience in technical report writing.
