2026–2027 School Year

The City of Millville is seeking responsible, dependable, and safety-conscious individuals to serve as part-time School Crossing Guards during the 2026–2027 school year. School Crossing Guards play an important role in protecting children as they travel to and from school by safely regulating pedestrian and vehicle traffic at assigned intersections.

Position Information

Position Title: School Crossing Guard
Employment Type: Part-time, temporary/seasonal appointment
Appointment Period: 2026–2027 school year; appointment will end at the conclusion of the school year
Hourly Rate: Current New Jersey minimum wage—currently $15.92 per hour, subject to adjustment in accordance with applicable law
Schedule: School days, 7:00am to 10:00am and 1:30pm to 4:30pm- 6 hours per day
Location: Assigned school crossing locations within the City of Millville

Work schedules and locations will be determined by the City based on school schedules, operational needs, and assigned crossing posts. This position is a split schedule with separate morning and afternoon assignments.

What You’ll Do

Under direction, the School Crossing Guard regulates and directs the movement of schoolchildren and traffic at an assigned street intersection, with primary attention given to the safety of children.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting and protecting children as they cross streets and intersections.
  • Regulating pedestrian and vehicle traffic at assigned school crossing locations.
  • Observing traffic conditions and reporting safety concerns or recommending appropriate changes.
  • Remaining alert to approaching vehicles, changing traffic patterns, and potential hazards.
  • Notifying the appropriate authorities when police assistance or medical attention is required.
  • Responding professionally to questions or concerns from children, parents, school personnel, motorists, and members of the public.
  • Maintaining required records and preparing reports.
  • Learning to use the electronic and manual recording systems required by the City.
  • Wearing and properly maintaining the uniform and safety equipment provided by the City.
  • Following all applicable City and Police Department rules regarding conduct, safety, and professional behavior.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Training and Equipment

No prior crossing guard experience is required. The City will provide the training required by New Jersey law, including:

  • A minimum of two hours of classroom instruction covering traffic-control methods and the duties and responsibilities of School Crossing Guards; and
  • A minimum of 20 hours of supervised field training with an experienced School Crossing Guard or regular police officer.

The City will provide the required uniform and safety equipment before the employee is assigned to a crossing post.

Qualifications

  • Be a citizen and resident of the State of New Jersey.
  • Be physically capable of safely performing the essential duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Be of good moral character.
  • Satisfy all statutory eligibility requirements for appointment as an adult school crossing guard.
  • Be able to work effectively and appropriately with children.
  • Remain calm, alert, and decisive during emergency situations.
  • Learn and follow traffic-safety procedures and applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with children and members of the public.
  • Respond appropriately to inquiries and complaints.
  • Maintain accurate records and files.
  • Use required electronic and manual information or recording systems.
  • Read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered acceptable forms of communication.
  • Be dependable and able to report on time for all scheduled assignments.
  • Be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and remain standing for the duration of an assigned crossing period.
