The City of Milpitas is seeking a skilled and motivated Maintenance Supervisor to lead the operations of our Water Section. The ideal candidate is a dynamic leader with a strong background in water distribution and treatment systems, and a deep commitment to public service and environmental stewardship.
The Maintenance Supervisor for the Public Works Department Water Section plans, organizes, and supervises the operations, maintenance, and repair of water and associated infrastructure. This role oversees field crews and lead staff responsible for ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant drinking water through proper treatment processes, system maintenance, and facility upkeep. The position ensures work is completed efficiently, in accordance with regulatory standards, and in alignment with departmental goals.
The Maintenance Supervisor also assists in budget preparation, monitors use of equipment, materials, and chemicals, and ensures compliance with environmental and public health regulations.
This individual will bring at least five years of progressively responsible experience in public works or water utility maintenance, including two years of supervisory or lead worker experience. They possess a current D4 Water Distribution Operator Certificate and T2 Water Treatment Operator Certificate and are ready to obtain a D5 within the required timeframe. They have proven expertise in overseeing large‑scale maintenance and repair programs, utilizing SCADA and CMMS systems, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal water quality standards.

Maintenance Supervisor.
- Assists in developing and implementing goals, objectives, policies and priorities for the division and assigned section
- Supervises section to ensure balanced work distribution, cross training, and maximizing work efficiencies
- Plans, organizes, supervises, and evaluates the work and performance of maintenance staff in Streets, Utilities, Landscape, Trees, Parks or Building Facility maintenance section
- Prioritizes and assigns work, schedules employee work shifts, overtime, vacation, sick leave coverage and related, and reviews and approves timecards
- Trains employees in work procedures, standards, and safety practices, and reviews work in progress or upon completion for compliance with standards
- Interviews and recommends selection of job applicants, appraises employee performance, conducts informal counseling on work issues and prepares documentation, and recommends discipline and improvement plans for deficiencies
- Keeps abreast and maintains knowledge and contact with the latest technology and applies it to section
- Studies maintenance functions, recommends and implements improvements
- Develops procedures and standards to ensure sound work and compliance with applicable regulations
- Inspects maintenance sites to evaluate work process and quality; resolves work problems; determines additional needs; assumes continuous support and follow up
- Inspects service contractors’ or vendors’ work and verifies work and/or materials delivered and approves billing for payment
- Plans, lays out, explains and may personally supervise large jobs
- Evaluates, selects or recommends selection of, and orders materials, supplies and equipment
- Develops and maintains positive and supportive work relationships with staff, other supervisors and other departments
