Field Service Engineer
Location:
Field-based (covering Crewe, Birmingham, Derby, Banbury, Milton Keynes)
Salary: £42,000 (DOE) + Access to Company Van, Fuel Card, Tablet & Tools
Overview
We are seeking a customer-focused Field Service Engineer to support the installation, maintenance, and repair of rail vehicle door systems. This role is ideal for engineers from automotive, plant, aerospace, rail, or similar engineering backgrounds with strong mechanical and pneumatic expertise.
You’ll be working on-site at depots and customer locations, ensuring equipment is safe, reliable, and fully operational while providing a high level of technical support to customers.
Key Responsibilities
Install, commission, service, and repair door systems on rolling stock, including:
Passenger doors
Cab doors
Internal/inter-car doors
Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic faults efficiently
Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) in line with schedules
Ensure all work complies with safety regulations and industry standards
Accurately complete service reports, fault logs, and maintenance records
Act as a customer-facing representative, providing technical support and building strong working relationships
Work closely with depot teams and operators to improve reliability and minimise downtime
Identify recurring issues and recommend improvements or upgrades
Maintain company vehicle, tools, and equipment in safe working condition
Participate in overtime or on-call rota where required
Skills & Experience
Experience in a Field Service Engineer or similar role (automotive, plant, aerospace, rail or related sectors)
Strong hands-on knowledge of:
Mechanical systems (linkages, locking mechanisms, actuators)
Pneumatic systems (essential)
Basic electrical fault-finding (DC/control systems)
Proven ability in fault diagnosis and repair in a customer-facing environment
Comfortable interpreting technical drawings and schematics
Able to work independently and manage your own workload effectively
Qualifications
NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering (essential)
Pneumatics experience (essential)
Electrical qualifications (desirable)
Rail competencies (PTS, depot protection) – desirable
Full UK driving licence (essential)
