Overview

Assistant Services Manager (ASM) is responsible for leading the services business in alignment with Ulta Beauty’s mission, vision, and values. The ASM manages a team of stylists and estheticians, drives hair and skin service sales, oversees service and merchandise revenue, and supports the Experience Manager in overall store performance.

Principal

Duties & Responsibilities

Performance:

  • Perform salon hair services, makeup applications, skincare analysis, brow services, and product demonstrations.
  • Achieve individual productivity goals each week.
  • Promote a culture of accountability to meet or exceed store service, merchandise, guest loyalty, and operational targets.
  • Drive profitability through operational excellence, top‑line sales growth, and expense control.
  • Plan and execute service events that enhance guest experience and meet sales and payroll objectives.
  • Analyze financial and operational reports regularly to identify and address underperforming metrics.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, products, and services to better serve guests.
  • Maintain attendance and hold service associates accountable to the Ulta Beauty attendance policy.

People:

  • Recruit, hire, and retain a diverse team of service professionals via multiple channels, including social media.
  • Build a highly engaged team that embodies the Ulta Beauty brand through collaboration, open communication, and coaching for guest loyalty.
  • Provide training, coaching, individualized feedback, succession planning, and development plans to drive sales performance.
  • Develop inclusive relationships with associates and brand partners to support shared sales and service goals.
  • Promote a culture of service excellence by sharing best practices and establishing priorities.

Process:

  • Ensure compliance with Ulta Beauty policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Respond promptly to company communications.
  • Enforce the dress code and maintain inventory within budget.
  • Use task management tools to prioritize and execute store workload such as product resets, pricing updates, inventory tasks, cleaning, and replenishment.
  • Protect company assets and minimize loss through safety, inventory control, and loss prevention standards.
  • Promote continuous improvement by adopting company initiatives and technology.
  • Assist in scheduling service associates to optimize traffic and productivity.
Job Qualifications

Education:

  • Cosmetology school graduate.
  • Cosmetology license and/or management license as required by state law.

Experience:

  • 2–3+ years of relevant, fast‑paced salon management experience or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of state cosmetology board regulations and hiring requirements.
  • Financial management: success driving top‑line sales, interpreting reporting data, managing payroll budgets, and controlling expenses.
  • Leadership & management: experience attracting, developing, and motivating top talent, adapting to change, and building collaborative relationships.

Skills:

  • Proficiency with salon techniques such as haircutting, haircolor, lightening, styling, texture treatments, extensions, makeup, and brow services.
  • Ability to perform ear piercing services (where applicable) and develop skills across all service categories.
  • Proficiency with basic technology (POS, Microsoft Office, Apple devices).
  • Strong collaboration, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to react under pressure, exercise good judgment in ambiguous situations, and remain flexible/adaptable.

Special Position Requirements:

  • Work a flexible full‑time schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Attend corporate business meetings and conferences.

Working Conditions:

  • Continuous mobility throughout the store during shift.
  • Frequent standing, bending, reaching, twisting, and lifting up to 10 lbs.
  • Frequent use of computer, telephone, and related office supplies.
