Overview
The CIT role is a volunteer position designed to prepare participants for future opportunities as a paid counselor with Camp Compass. As a CIT, you will act as a mentor, teacher, guide, and support system for the campers (ages 5–12) who attend Camp Compass. The primary goal of a CIT is to help create a fun, safe, and inclusive camp environment while gaining valuable leadership skills and hands-on experience.
First-year CITs are limited to volunteering for a maximum of 2 weeks.
- Assist camp counselors in guiding a group of campers (ages between 5 - 12) through the daily camp schedule.
- Uphold the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of all campers.
- Foster a welcoming and engaging atmosphere by encouraging campers to participate in activities.
- Lead or co-lead activities, adapting them as necessary to ensure every camper can succeed.
- Complete necessary forms, including reports for discipline, accidents, and illness.
- Actively engage with campers in social and recreational activities throughout the day.
- Provide feedback to the leadership team regarding the needs and experiences of campers.
- Must be a rising high school freshman (or older).
- CPR/First Aid/AED certification is preferred but not required.

Demonstrates emerging leadership skills by modeling positive behavior, teamwork, and responsibility while supporting campers and camp counselors. - Complexity:
Participates in a dynamic camp environment that requires adapting to changing activities, camper needs, and daily schedules while learning camp operations. - Decision Making:
Uses appropriate judgment to support camper safety and participation and seeks guidance from camp counselors or leadership when needed. - Competencies/Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Assists camp counselors in supervising and guiding campers through daily activities and routines; supports the safety, inclusion, and well-being of campers by following camp rules and procedures; engages campers in games, activities, and social interactions in a positive and encouraging manner; communicates effectively with campers, counselors, and camp leadership regarding camper needs or concerns; learns and follows instructions provided by camp staff and leadership;
assists with activity setup, cleanup, and maintaining a safe and organized camp environment; works cooperatively as part of a team to support overall camp operations; demonstrates reliability, responsibility, and a willingness to learn in a supervised camp setting.
- Work is performed primarily in an outdoor recreational camp environment with exposure to varying weather conditions.
- Requires prolonged standing, walking, bending, and active physical participation in camp activities.
- Involves active supervision of children, including swimming and entering the pool during aquatic activities.
- Includes frequent interaction with children, parents, and staff in a fast-paced setting.
- May require responding to behavioral, medical, or safety situations as they arise.
