Overview

The role of the Summer Camp Counselor consists of mentoring, teaching, guiding, providing a safe environment and a support system for the children who attend camp. The purpose of this position is to supervise, teach, and instruct youth in various games, arts, and leisure skills in a camp environment. The Counselor’s chief responsibilities that help achieve this goal are: leading a specific group of children through the daily camp schedule, providing support and encouragement to all campers, and working with team members to ensure that the needs of all campers are met.

The Counselor reports to the Camp Manager and Assistant Camp Manager.

  • Provides direct oversight of participants for all aspects of camp.
  • Ensure a safe environment for campers.
  • Performs duties associated with summer camp including supervising assigned campers, preventing accidents by enforcing camp policies and rules, and communicating policies and rules to campers.
  • Leads and instructs games, crafts, and activities appropriate to camp and as directed by Camp Manager and Assistant Camp Manager.
  • Assists in coordinating the logistical set-up and cleanup of camp; assist in maintaining cleanliness of the facility and restrooms; performs routine maintenance during break including checking restrooms and picking up trash, straightening chairs and tables and other duties as required.
  • Participates in in–service training as required; participate in weekly staff meetings
  • Act as a positive role model for campers; administer camper disciplinary procedures, when warranted.
  • Communicate any problems or concerns to the Camp Manager or Assistant Camp Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Camp Manager and Assistant Camp Manger.
  • Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
  • Sixteen (16) years of age or High School Diploma or GED
  • One- two years previous camp experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must possess or acquire the following certifications:
    Standard First Aid and CPR/AED (American Heart Association or American Red Cross). Certification classes will be provided by the City of Milton prior to camp.? Certifications must be valid through the employment period.
  • Additional Requirements:
  • Must be available to attend the required Camp Compass training scheduled for May 28-29.
  • Must be available to work a minimum of six (6) out of seven (7) weeks of the camp session.
  • Ability to swim and physically enter the pool to actively supervise and assist campers during aquatic activities is an essential function of this position. Employees must perform this function throughout the camp session.
  • Must have a valid Georgia Driver's License.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background screening required.?
  • Leadership: Serves as a positive role model for campers by demonstrating appropriate behavior, teamwork, and responsibility while guiding assigned groups through daily activities.
  • Complexity: Works in a fast-paced camp environment that requires adapting to changing activities, camper needs, and environmental conditions throughout the day.
  • Decision Making: Uses sound judgment to manage camper behavior, safety concerns, and activity participation within established camp policies and under supervisory guidance.
  • Competencies/Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Provides direct supervision and support to assigned campers throughout all camp activities.
  • Communicates effectively with campers, fellow counselors, and camp leadership to support daily operations and camper needs.
  • Understands and follows camp rules, safety procedures, and instructions provided by camp leadership.
  • Actively supervises campers in all environments, including aquatic activities, and responds appropriately to safety needs.
  • Works cooperatively as part of a team to ensure a positive camp experience for all participants.
  • Demonstrates reliability, responsibility, and a commitment to providing a safe and supportive camp environment.

  • Work is performed primarily in an outdoor recreational camp environment with exposure to varying weather conditions.

  • Includes frequent interaction with children, parents, and staff in a fast-paced setting.
  • May require responding to behavioral, medical, or safety situations as they arise.
