Position: Upper School Science Teacher - Biology & Chemistry

Department: Upper School - Science Department

Location: Pritzker Science Center, Milton Academy Campus, Milton, MA

Hours: Full-time with the flexibility to work nights and weekends

FLSA: Exempt

Classification: Faculty (Academic Year)

Base Salary: For the 2026-27 academic year, faculty salaries range from $50,000 to $120,000 annually. Placement within this range is determined by years of experience, in alignment with Milton Academy's faculty salary scale, which is designed to ensure equitable pay progression.

Housing Stipend: Faculty members who reside off-campus will also receive an annual stipend of $13,000 (in 2026-27) in addition to the base salary listed above.

Summary of Position:

Milton Academy is seeking a Science teacher who fosters a dynamic and inclusive learning environment focused on innovative teaching practices and student engagement. The individual is expected to actively support students, create a positive classroom culture, and adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learning styles.

This position involves instructing courses in chemistry and potentially biology, providing students with inquiry-based experiences across the life and physical sciences at all levels (regular, honors, and advanced). The role includes the development, implementation, and ongoing review of curriculum and course materials in the relevant disciplines.

For 2026-27, the school seeks candidates who can contribute to residential life programming, including living on campus and serving as a house parent. Strong candidates committed to living on campus may receive preference.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Teaching and Curriculum
  • Design and implement curriculum for chemistry and potentially biology courses, emphasizing student engagement while fostering a deep appreciation for scientific inquiry and laboratory practices.
  • Develop and refine courses across relevant disciplines, including potential electives.
  • Teach a range of courses from introductory to advanced levels in chemistry and potentially biology; preference for candidates able to teach advanced electives (e.g., organic chemistry or specialized biology topics).
  • Create a student-centered learning environment that promotes critical thinking, experimental design, laboratory skills, and data analysis.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere that encourages curiosity, participation, and discussion.
  • Differentiate instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities.
  • Stay current with developments in science education, biology, and chemistry, incorporating new pedagogical approaches and scientific advancements into the curriculum.
  • Engage with and apply principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in curriculum design, teaching practices, and student interactions.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary initiatives, including partnerships with the middle school division on curriculum and instruction.
  • Actively support students through mentorship and academic advising.
  • Assess and evaluate student performance through a variety of methods, including assignments, projects, lab reports, and exams.
  • Provide timely, detailed feedback and written comments that reflect a comprehensive understanding of each student's progress.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues regarding academic growth and performance.
Advising
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of up to nine students, engaging in advisor meetings each week.
  • Connect, support, communicate, encourage, and celebrate each advisee
    • Facilitate students' social-emotional learning and growth in alignment with all school programming through small group meetings.
    • Build deep relationships with each advisee and assist them in navigating challenges they may encounter.
    • Form relationships with and act as a liaison between the school and advisee families; serve as the first point of contact between the school and families.
  • Read and be familiar with all relevant materials, most importantly the Student Handbook and the sections of the US Faculty Handbook on academic regulations and diploma requirements.
  • Be informed about course offerings for the following year and help each advisee select programs that are challenging and appropriate, as well as areas of special interest.
  • Review each advisee's grades and comments.
  • Craft formal advisor reports for each advisee two times per year, offering overarching perspectives on their progress, and acknowledging a broader view of their academic and community achievements at Milton.
  • Should an advisee need additional support in a particular area, be in steady contact with the advisee's teachers, administrators, and/or other committees as needed.
